🕯️ Today, March 25th is International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade
Nearly 15 million African men, women, and children were taken from their homes, families, and futures over four centuries of the transatlantic slave trade.
The formal import began in 1525 and lasted until 1866. Over 12.5 million Africans were shipped to Western countries — only 10.7 million survived the journey.
These were not nameless statistics. They were skilled, intelligent human beings — specifically chosen and enslaved BECAUSE of their knowledge, their farming expertise, and their brilliance.
And yet they received nothing after abolition.
Today, the United Nations asks us to "Break the Silence — Lest We Forget."
Because the remnants of slavery didn't end with emancipation. They live in systemic racism, inequality, and injustice that the African diaspora still faces today.
🕯️ We remember. We honor. We refuse to be silent.
"The only way to keep the memories alive is to continue to talk about them."
