A gift subscription has two customers. Most billing systems are built for one.

The giver pays. The recipient reads. If your system can’t hold those two roles separately, you get receipts sent to the wrong person, welcome emails that spoil the surprise, and renewal charges nobody agreed to.

Our new guide walks magazine publishers through the whole lifecycle:
→ Sell: a dedicated “Give a gift” checkout, print / digital / bundle formats, gift notices scheduled for the occasion
→ Bill: charge the full term upfront, keep purchase, start and end dates as three separate fields, hold the cash as deferred revenue until issues ship, calculate tax on the recipient’s address
→ Renew: never auto-charge the giver without opt-in. Offer the giver an extension about 60 days out, and invite the recipient to convert in the final quarter they’ve already built the reading habit.

Plus the four mistakes behind most gift-related support tickets.

Where SubscriptionFlow stands out: giver and recipient live on one subscription with separate billing and delivery contacts, revenue defers automatically per issue, renewal sequences run for both parties, and print fulfilment and digital access are orchestrated from a single profile with gift coupons, bulk pricing for corporate buyers and recipient self-service built in.

A price per seat no longer describes how most software gets billed.

Usage tiers, a base fee plus overage, prepaid credits, ramp deals, customer-specific rates. Once pricing looks like that, an invoicing tool isn't enough. You need a rating engine.

We compared six platforms for complex pricing: Zuora, Chargebee, SubscriptionFlow, NetSuite SuiteBilling, Salesforce Revenue Cloud and BillingPlatform. The guide covers:

→ The pricing models complex billing has to handle
→ 8 factors to test: rating engine, hybrid support, contract changes, ASC 606 / IFRS 15, integrations, scale, time to go live, total cost
→ Pros, cons and pricing for each platform
→ Security checks that go beyond the badge

One tip we'd give any finance team: bring your hardest pricing plan and real usage volumes to every demo, and ask for a three-year quote. The sticker price is rarely the real cost.

Where SubscriptionFlow stands out:
✔ Published plans by revenue band, so budgeting starts early
✔ A flexible rating engine that runs hybrid models without custom code
✔ Agentic workflows for subscription lifecycles, dunning and payment gateway routing
✔ Visual reporting and real-time subscription analytics
✔ PCI DSS Level 1 and GDPR compliant

Best for mid-market and growing enterprise teams that want usage and hybrid billing without a long ERP-style project. Setup does need initial developer configuration, and we say so in the guide.

Shopify Payments isn't available in South Africa. So which gateway do you actually plug in?

We compared the five most-used options for Shopify stores:
→ Paystack: 2.9% + R1 on local cards, built for subscriptions
→ PayFast: the widest local method coverage (cards, Instant EFT, SnapScan, Payflex)
→ Peach Payments: card tokenisation and fast settlement
→ Yoco: simple setup for small and mid-sized stores
→ Ozow: Instant EFT from 1.5%

What to check before you choose: Shopify compatibility, security, fees, payment methods and settlement speed.

One catch: most gateways handle one-off purchases well. Recurring billing, retries and dunning need a billing layer on top.

That's where SubscriptionFlow helps. It integrates with all of these gateways and handles flexible plans, automated invoicing, proration, multi-currency billing, failed-payment recovery and dunning. Whichever gateway you pick, your recurring revenue runs on autopilot.

Ever lost a loyal subscriber just because their card expired? 😕

It happens more than you'd think, and it has nothing to do with the customer wanting to leave.

Pay by Bank lets people pay straight from their bank account instead: no card number, no expiry date. Our new guide explains how it works, where it beats cards, and where cards still win.

With SubscriptionFlow 's TrueLayer integration, you can offer Pay by Bank while keeping billing, renewals and payment follow-up in one place.

Three entities. One customer. How do you bill them without three spreadsheets?

A global customer rarely buys from one place. The parent signs one contract, but your US, UK and UAE entities each invoice in their own currency, under their own tax rules.

Where multi-entity billing usually breaks:
→ Each entity runs its own invoices, so nobody sees the full customer picture
→ Currencies get converted by hand at month end
→ Finance reconciles the same parent customer three times

What good multi-entity billing looks like:
→ One parent customer, with each entity billing in its local currency
→ Tax and compliance handled per region
→ One view of what the whole account owes

How SubscriptionFlow helps:
✔ Multi-entity support, so every unit works from the same billing data
✔ Multi-currency invoicing, so customers are billed in their local currency
✔ Automated tax calculation for the regions you operate in
✔ Automated revenue recognition (ASC 606 and IFRS 15)
✔ Integrations with accounting and CRM tools, so data stays consistent
✔ Real-time reporting across your subscription revenue

Is your billing set up around your entities, or around your customer?

Mid-Term Upgrades & Proration Without Invoice Errors

A customer upgrades on day 17 of a 30-day cycle. What should their invoice say?

Here's the mid-term proration math (illustrative):

→ Old plan: $60/mo = $2/day. 14 unused days = −$28.00 credit
→ New plan: $120/mo = $4/day. 14 remaining days = +$56.00 charge
→ Net due today: $28.00

The math is simple. The errors come from doing it by hand: wrong day counts, missing credit lines, or one lump sum the customer can't check.

Good mid-term proration shows the credit and the charge as separate line items, so finance can reconcile and support can explain it in one reply.

How SubscriptionFlow helps:
✔ Detects the plan change the moment it happens
✔ Splits the cycle and works out the credit and the new charge, by exact day or hour
✔ Puts clear credit + charge lines on the invoice
✔ Handles seat changes, mid-cycle cancellations and billing-date consolidation
✔ Keeps prorated line items aligned with ASC 606 / IFRS 15 reporting

Six tools wired point-to-point can need up to 15 integrations. Through a billing hub, you need six: one connection per tool.

That's the idea behind a billing hub. It owns contracts, pricing, proration and invoicing, and your CRM, payments, tax tool and ERP each connect to it once.

The ownership rule: CRM owns relationships. Your gateway owns money movement. Your tax tool owns tax rules. Your ERP owns the books. The hub owns everything in between.

How SubscriptionFlow helps:
→ Closed-won deals arrive with ramp schedules and price overrides intact
→ Usage is rated against your price book and added to the same invoice as seats
→ Your payment gateway stays; we send it the total and take status back, including retries
→ Tax is calculated per invoice line, per entity
→ Clean journal entries and revenue schedules post to your ledger under ASC 606

Connect once. Bill right.

Ramp deals look simple on paper: Year 1 at one price, Year 2 at another, Year 3 higher still. 📈

The hard part is billing them right. Your system has to:
✔ Charge the correct rate in every contract year
✔ Track prepaid commits and bill true-ups
✔ Prorate mid-term changes

SubscriptionFlow keeps all of it in one place, so finance, sales and ops stop chasing spreadsheets.

50 seats. 1.2M API calls. A seat change halfway through the month.

What does that customer's invoice look like?

If your billing system can't answer in one document, you have a hybrid billing problem. Hybrid billing means a subscription fee and metered usage billed together. Here's how the example works:

→ The 50 seats bill as a normal subscription charge
→ The 1.2M API calls are metered and rated against your usage pricing
→ The mid-cycle seat change is prorated for the days left in the cycle
→ All three land on one itemized invoice

No spreadsheet merging. No second invoice for usage. No manual proration math.

SubscriptionFlow combines subscriptions, metered usage and one-time charges in a single engine. It supports tiered and overage pricing, and revenue recognition is split automatically across the subscription and usage parts.
