Ahead of its premiere at Festival du Nouveau Cinéma on October 11, we asked "Girl Found Dead" cinematographer Nikolay Michaylov CSC about the lens choices behind the film's look, shot on ALEXA 35 with ARRI Rental's modified S4X lenses.

"Girl Found Dead draws from director Molly Shears' childhood memories of growing up in the '90s. While that period is an important part of the film's DNA, we never wanted the imagery to feel overtly nostalgic or to place the story firmly in the past. There are ideas within the film, particularly around fear and the way stories are filtered through the media, that still feel very present today.

That became an important consideration when choosing lenses. I wanted something with character, but also enough sharpness and clarity that the imagery wouldn't immediately place the story in another era. Going too vintage risked creating a nostalgia that felt counter to what the film was trying to say.

I've always been drawn to the Cooke look for its warmth, smooth contrast and ability to feel sharp without becoming clinical. ARRI Rental's modified S4X lenses felt like a natural fit, and their additional speed was incredibly valuable for a number of low-light night sequences. Paired with the ALEXA 35, the S4Xs helped us make something that could carry traces of memory without allowing the imagery to belong entirely to the past."

25 years after first aired, HBO has released a retrospective documentary featuring the original cast: "Band of Brothers: Legacy."

Based on Stephen E. Ambrose’s non-fiction book, the original "Band of Brothers" followed Easy Company of the US Army’s 101st Airborne Division during World War II.

Executive producers Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks brought together cinematographers Joel Ransom, CSC, and Remi Adefarasin OBE, BSC, for the 11-hour production, who heightened the realism of the production by shooting handheld on Moviecam SL and ARRIFLEX 535B cameras with Zeiss Ultra Prime lenses.

The series went on to win six Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe and an AFI Award.

ARRI Rental, then known as ARRI Media in the UK, serviced the production. Earlier this year, we were delighted to celebrate its 25th anniversary and support a BSC Retrospective Q&A with Remi and members of his original camera team: operator Alan Stewart BSC, focus puller Ben Wilson Assoc BSC ACO and loader Dave Cozens.

🏆 Congratulations to Dan Laustsen ASC, DFF, who has been awarded the Golden Camera 300 Lifetime Achievement Award at the 47th Manaki Brothers International Cinematographers’ Film Festival in Bitola, North Macedonia.

With a career spanning more than four decades and over 60 international productions, Dan is best known for his long-standing creative partnership with Guillermo del Toro, which has resulted in three Academy Award nominations for “The Shape of Water“ (2017), “Nightmare Alley“ (2021) and “Frankenstein” (2025).

He is also widely recognised for his work on Chad Stahelski’s cult “John Wick“ franchise, serving as cinematographer on Chapters 2, 3 and 4, where he redefined the possibilities of complex action cinematography.

A richly deserved honour for an outstanding cinematographer and valued creative collaborator.

Congratulations, Dan, from everyone at ARRI Rental. We look forward to many more collaborations to come. 🎥

Is the sixth season of “Slow Horses” the best one yet? Based on the “Slough House” novels by Nick Herron, the critically acclaimed spy thriller continues to follow a dysfunctional team of MI5 agents and their obnoxious boss, Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman).

Directed by Adam Randall, all six episodes were shot by cinematographer Eben Bolter ASC, BSC, using the ALEXA 35 paired with Atlas Mercury 1.5x anamorphic lenses.

The first episode premieres today on Apple TV, with new episodes dropping weekly.

It’s 28 years since the original “Practical Magic” introduced the Owens sisters, Sally (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian (Nicole Kidman), descendants of witches burdened with a family curse that dooms any man they fall in love with. Both reprise their roles in “Practical Magic 2”, where, 25 years after the events of the first film, the family curse seems to have caught up with one of Sally’s two daughters. In a bid to break the magic once and for all, the sisters travel to the UK to seek help. 🪄

Director Susanne Bier was joined by cinematographer Simon Duggan ASC, ACS who shot the film on the ALEXA 265 with Atlas Mercury anamorphics.

“I really enjoyed using the ALEXA 265 for “Practical Magic 2”. It delivers imagery similar to the ALEXA 65, while offering slightly better dynamic range, higher light sensitivity and a simpler color workflow.

One of the most impressive aspects of the camera is its compact size. It felt just like we were using the ALEXA 35, and my operator, Mark Goellnicht, found it perfect for all the Steadicam, handheld and small remote-head work we did on this film.

As expected, the ARRI sensor gave Sandra and Nicole such great, smooth skin tones, while the secondary colors we predominantly used had a really beautiful quality to them.

We also paired the camera with Atlas Mercury 1.5x anamorphic lenses and an adapter that allowed us to use soft filtration behind the lenses.”
