A truly wonderful 19th century child's piece-constructed, dyed showing several different plaids and a striped partial lining along with a cotton velour collar area, a luxury fabric in the Meiji era (1868-1912). The kimono is lightly padded.

The soft edges on the images on this furoshiki have intrigued me since I acquired this piece about a year or two ago.

I've been studying it and I now believe that this is probably made of three stitched-together or traditional hand towels that have been dyed in the chusen method, where a stencil is flooded with different colored ink and a primitive type of vacuum sucks the ink through many layers of cloth--one of the results of this is softened edges to images that are imprinted into the fiber of the cloth.

A rare and unusual shimacho which is an album of snippets of hand woven cloth, the album often is a recycled ledger book as this one is.

What makes this shimacho unusual is that the snippets are stitched to the page, not set on the page with rice paste which is the norm.
