If you are FERS and planning to retire soon, here is a detail that is easy to miss. Your first full annuity check does not show up right away. In May 2026, OPM's average claim took 87 days to process, and interim pay usually covers only 60 to 80 percent of your net annuity in the meantime.
So about a year out, figure out your bridge number, the cash that needs to be in a plain savings account on your last day. Count your annual leave payout and your reserves. If you separate from federal service in or after the year you turn 55, TSP withdrawals may avoid the early-withdrawal penalty, but check how that applies to you with your own tax professional. That way a slow case is an annoyance, not an emergency.
