Researchers in Germany have developed an advanced porous material that can collect water v***r from dry air while also helping buildings stay cooler.

The material is designed with tiny connected pores that absorb moisture from the atmosphere. Under the right environmental conditions, it can release that moisture as liquid water.

In favorable laboratory tests, the system showed water production of up to about 60 ounces, or 1.8 liters, per day. This makes it promising for areas where clean water is limited and air humidity is still available.

The material also helps manage heat. Its engineered surface can reflect sunlight and radiate heat toward the sky, which helps lower surface temperatures without using large amounts of electricity.

The cooling claim needs simple context. The material has shown up to three times the cooling performance of silica gel in adsorption cooling systems, but it is not meant to fully replace normal air conditioners.

Instead, it could reduce how hard air conditioning systems need to work. By lowering surface temperatures naturally, it may cut energy demand in hot buildings.

The research is supported by two 2026 studies, including DOI 10.1039/D6TA00544F on M*F carbon foam composites for atmospheric water harvesting and DOI 10.1021/acs.iecr.5c05308 on CAU-10-H scale-up and cooling use.

This innovation could be especially useful in hot, dry, and water-stressed regions. It combines water harvesting and passive cooling in one material, offering a way to support water security while reducing energy consumption.
