A recent example of why many older adults want to age in place----to maintain their autonomy.
Getting older should not mean that you are no longer allowed to do things you enjoy. There may be an age requirement for how old you must be to consume alcohol, but there is not one limiting the age at which alcohol consumption stops.
Assisted living should not equate to a controlled life and loss of decision making, but to many older adults it can appear this way. As long as this is the case, older adults will aim to age in place so they can preserve their autonomy.
Minnesota grandma Anita LeBrun fought a ban on alcohol in assisted communities in her state. She just saw the amendment — nicknamed the ‘Grandparents’ Happy Hour’ bill — get signed into law.
