Maintaining your independence is a primary objective for those aging in place.

Simple, but necessary activities, such as opening a package of hearing aid batteries should not require assistance but it's little things like this that make it harder and harder for older adults to age in place.

A recent example of why many older adults want to age in place----to maintain their autonomy.

Getting older should not mean that you are no longer allowed to do things you enjoy. There may be an age requirement for how old you must be to consume alcohol, but there is not one limiting the age at which alcohol consumption stops.

Assisted living should not equate to a controlled life and loss of decision making, but to many older adults it can appear this way. As long as this is the case, older adults will aim to age in place so they can preserve their autonomy.

Minnesota grandma Anita LeBrun fought a ban on alcohol in assisted communities in her state. She just saw the amendment — nicknamed the ‘Grandparents’ Happy Hour’ bill — get signed into law.

Fitness is an important part of aging in place. For National Park & Recreation month one way to make staying fit more enjoyable might be to use the equipment at a FitLot at a city park.

As summer temperatures heat up, keep track of your local HeatRisk.

Aging bodies do not regulate temperature as easily making it more likely for older adults to overheat. Stay hydrated and stay cool to keep aging in place!

Autonomy while aging remains important even with a diagnosis of dementia.

While aging in place may no longer be an option for some, the ability to maintain some autonomy remains crucial and a new living community for those with dementia aims to preserve this.
Modeled after what has been done in other countries, a Wisconsin community is developing a dementia village.

The residential community is underway in Wisconsin, and will resemble a neighborhood, not a nursing home

A big part of being able to age in place is staying healthy. Vaccinations are a critical component of maintaining your health.

Now is the time for vaccinations. Covid and Flu vaccinations require annual boosters, but RSV is a 'one-and-done'.

For those in the 50+ age range, there are also vaccinations available for shingles and pneumonia.

Check with your doctor to see which vaccinations are recommended for you.
