Everyone agreed.

Except…no one actually said they agreed.

That's the problem with false harmony.

When people stop challenging unrealistic commitments, raising concerns, or saying what they really think, a quiet room can look like alignment.

It isn't.

Real alignment doesn't mean everyone agrees.
It means people feel safe enough to disagree, ask questions, and challenge the decision before walking out of the room.

Because the conversation you avoid in the meeting usually shows up later as:
→ missed deadlines
→ frustrated employees
→ poor morale
→ and another meeting asking, “How did this happen?”

Silence is not agreement.

PICTURE THIS...

You’re working on a project with a coworker. They keep checking in.

❓ “Where are we on this?”
❓“Did you send that email?”
❓“Can you CC me?”

They review your work before you even ask and seem to want to be involved in every little decision.

What's your assumption?

🙄 They don't trust me.
🙄 They think I'm incompetent.
🙄 They need to control everything.
🙄 They don't think I can do my job.

But what don't you know?

Maybe they've been burned by missed deadlines before.
Maybe they're under pressure from their boss and don't know how to communicate it.
Maybe they're trying to be helpful, but their version of helpful feels like hovering.
Maybe nobody has ever clearly defined who owns what.

The lesson:

Their behavior is real. Your interpretation of their behavior is a story.

Before labeling someone a micromanager, get curious.

“I’ve noticed you're checking in pretty frequently. Is there something you're concerned about that I may not be seeing?”

You might discover the problem isn't what you assumed.

Your lack of planning does not create an emergency for a member on your team.

Just because something became urgent for you doesn't automatically make it urgent for everyone else.

As leaders and teammates, we have to remember: Urgency doesn't equal importance.

Before sending the “I need this NOW” message, ask yourself:

• Did I give them enough notice?
• Did I communicate expectations clearly?
• Is this actually urgent?
• Or did I simply wait too long?

Respecting people's time is part of being a good leader.
