One sibling lives nearby and does almost everything. Another lives far away and feels guilty. A third has strong opinions and not much time.

If that sounds like your family, you are not alone. Before you sit down together, settle these five things:

What is actually going on with Mom or Dad? Share the same facts, from doctor visits and from what each of you has seen.
What do they want? Include them early. It is their life.
Who can do what? Driving, paperwork, phone calls, money, visits. Everyone has something to give, even from far away.
Who is the point person for doctors and paperwork?
When do we check in again? Put the date on the calendar before you leave.

Keep the first meeting to an hour. Start with what you agree on. Leave the scorekeeping at the door.

This week we met with several clients and were lucky we showed up when we did for one who lived on their own and had fallen by the road taking out the trash. With no cell phone on them and their legs not cooperating they army crawled across the damp grass and waited to see if they could regain the strength to get up which they couldn’t. I’m so grateful it wasn’t the heat of the summer and had happened only 30 minutes before we got there. Their yard is secluded and it could have been days before they were found. The reality of how frustrating and stressful mobility issues can be is one of the key factors to downsizing and ensuring paths are clear and safety measures are in place.

We’re hopeful as our business grows that our commitment to providing a compassionate, transparent method for downsizing will be a legacy that lives on. We’re grateful to those who’ve engaged our posts and encouraged us to keep going. Some days are easier than others with costs and tensions being high but we’ll keep going because it matters. It only takes one candle to pass light on to another and make the dark less daunting.

Sometimes the first sign isn’t something you see. It’s something you hear on the phone.

If you call Mom or Dad every week, you may have noticed:

The same story told twice in one call
Trouble finding a word or name they have always known
Missed calls, or confusion about the day or time
Less interest in things they used to love
A voice that sounds tired, flat, or worried

One of these on a bad day is normal. A pattern over a few weeks is worth paying attention to.

What to do next: write down what you notice, with dates. Ask a sibling or a neighbor if they have seen it too. Then encourage a visit with their doctor. You do not need all the answers yet. You only need to start.

Noticing does not mean you are overreacting. It means you care.

The hospital says Mom can go home tomorrow. And suddenly you are the one who has to figure out what happens next.

Before she leaves, ask the discharge planner or case manager:

What help will she need at home in the first two weeks?
Does she need therapy, a walker, or other equipment, and who arranges it?
What changed with her medications?
Which follow-up appointments are needed, and who will get her there?
Who do I call if something does not feel right tonight?

Write the answers down. If home does not feel safe yet, say so out loud and ask what other options exist. You are allowed to ask and you should.
