17 Ways to Style the Table for Your Next Dinner Party

rowing up, we gathered with family over dinners served on paper plates with plastic utensils. Parties were casual and relaxed (plus, no one wanted to do the dishes). But on holidays, our dinner party table settings were complete with seasonal plates, napkins, and cutlery—and my grandmother always insisted on eating at the formal dining table. It felt special—and it was.

Now, when I host a small group of friends or family, I love to pull out the good plates. I’m one of those old-fashioned gals who actually registered for wedding china, but mine isn’t gathering dust in a cabinet. It’s right there next to our everyday dinner plates. Now, whenever I set the table with those cherished pieces, the whole experience feels elevated—and just as special as my grandma’s table.

Hitting the Reset Button on Dressing Your Restaurant’s Tabletops

In the restaurant industry, creating a memorable dining experience goes beyond serving delicious food.

Tablecloths and napkins not only add elegance but also serve a practical purpose. They protect the table surface from spills, stains, and scratches. High-quality linens offer better resistance to liquids, preventing them from seeping through onto the table. This helps in maintaining a cleaner and more hygienic dining environment.

Philippe the Original: still one of my Top 10 Restaurants in Los Angeles

People ask me all the time, “Peter, where should I take friends when they’re visiting Los Angeles?”

My answer usually starts with Philippe the Original.

No, it isn’t in Pasadena, but it’s close enough and has enough Pasadena pedigree to count. Tucked between Chinatown and Olvera Street, Philippe has been serving customers since 1908 and proudly claims to have invented the French Dip sandwich. Whether you’re a history buff or just hungry, it’s one of those places every Southern Californian should visit at least once.

Here’s a Peter Dills tip: arrive before the lunch rush, especially if the Dodgers are playing that afternoon. You’ll thank me later.

Redbird is officially the best brunch spot in Los Angeles

The biscuits and gravy—and a gorgeous setting—at this downtown spot put its brunch at the top of Time Out’s list. Los Angeles does brunch better than almost anywhere. After all, in a city where mornings start late and weather is rarely a concern, a long, indulgent meal is practically a must on the weekends. Here, you’ll find everything from champagne-soaked spreads to old-school diners pouring bottomless coffee for old-school prices. The best of them all? According to the Time Out editors who put together the best brunches in L.A. list, it's Redbird.

The Patio Power Rankings: Where To Eat & Drink Outside

You already know about LA’s weather. Aside from the occasional mega-drought or stint of June Gloom, it’s nearly perfect 12 months out of the year. And the obvious result of that is a great patio scene.

But how do you make sense of it all? For every Eden-esque outdoor space, there’s a DIY side alley filled with plastic furniture. You deserve better. Here are the 25 best patios in LA, ranked according to aesthetic appeal, functionality, and your ability to soak in as much California sunshine as possible.

75 Summer Dinner Recipe Ideas for the Best Seasonal Eating

These warm-weather meals are fast-cooking and full of fresh produce. There are several things we love about summer dinners. The first is all the fresh produce, like blackberries, watermelon, peaches, corn, and tomatoes. (It's especially good when you've grown it in your own vegetable garden, too!) The second is grilling and dining in the backyard with the fam.
