🍦🎉 Last week, the Pasadena team celebrated CODE V's 51st anniversary the best way we know how: with ice cream, good company, and a little trip down memory lane.

As we enjoyed multiple flavors of ice cream, we also introduced one of our newest team members to some classic pieces of CODE V history, including floppy disks, hardware dongles, cassette tapes, and other relics from the early days of optical design software. 😄

It's incredible to think about how far the technology has come over the past 51 years, from software distributed on physical media to the advanced optical design capabilities engineers use today.

Here's to the innovators who built CODE V, the engineers who continue to advance it, and the next generation discovering that software didn't always come from a download link. 😉

Happy 51st Anniversary, CODE V! 🎂🎈

Manufacture provides an engineer-focused overview of the design, materials, tooling, tolerancing, and production considerations involved in bringing molded optical components to market.

What makes this book particularly valuable is its coverage of knowledge that is often learned only through on-the-job experience. Because molded and plastic optics are highly specialized topics, they are rarely explored in depth in university lens design or optical systems design courses.

Highly recommended by our optical engineers as a practical resource for understanding the real-world considerations of plastic and molded optics design and manufacturing.

This past month, employees and retirees came together for an afternoon of lunch, laughter, and friendly competition. Great food and even better company made it a memorable day. 🎲🎲🎲

We usually celebrate with Bunco de Mayo, but this year we proved it’s never too late to keep the tradition going.🤩

Available Course | Illumination Fundamentals Training with JMO Illumination Optics

For engineers working in illumination design, a solid understanding of light behavior is essential for making reliable design decisions.

Our upcoming Illumination Fundamentals training provides a practical, measurement‑driven approach to key topics in illumination optics, including:

-Modeling sources and optical systems
-Photometric quantities and light behavior
-Optical elements and freeform optics
-Colorimetry for LED applications

The course is instructor‑led and designed for both those new to illumination and those looking to deepen their understanding.

Meet Kyle Miller, Ph.D.—one of the brilliant minds behind our R&D team!

Kyle works on advancing high-performance computing for our optical design software, helping make simulations faster and more powerful. Before joining us, Kyle developed cutting-edge algorithms to model complex laser and plasma interactions—some with speed improvements of over 1000×!

Outside of work, Kyle is a musician (saxophone, clarinet, and piano 🎷), enjoys basketball, board games, and spending time with family.

Great to be part of Rochester Optical Design Day at the University of Rochester last month on May 18.

Optical designers and engineers at the event focused on practical challenges and emerging opportunities in optical system design. We covered:

- What’s new in CODE V, including the Accelerated Custom Tolerancing (usertol) capability
- Insights and real-world perspectives from our Optical Engineering Services team
- Recent updates across LightTools, ImSym, RSoft, and VisionSym

Most valuable was the dialogue—hearing how teams are approaching system-level complexity, tolerancing workflows, and integration across optical and photonic design environments.

Thanks to everyone who joined the event and spent time connecting with us. Events like this reinforce how important it is to bring the community together to exchange ideas and push the field forward.
