Located off of Highway 46 West in Paso Robles, the winery sits on forty acres and is surrounded by the winery's dry farmed grapevines. These vines produce very low tonnage and extremely high quality fruit. Total annual case production is approximately 2000 cases, although production varies based on rainfall.

Late spring is a wonderful time of year in the vineyard.

The vines are growing, it's not too hot, the views go for miles.

It's hard for us to stop and enjoy it sometimes but every once in a while one view makes us pause and appreciate that we get to see this every day.

On this last weekend of May, we pulled out the 2013 Charbono.

This wine still has lots of fruit and a full but smooth body. While it could probably age a little longer, it was delicious as soon as it was opened so no one but Carol would say you should age it more.

We're getting ready to rack the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Riserva and Tre Sorelle into tanks. We needed to decide which Cabernet Sauvignon barrels to put in the Riserva and which to put in the Tre Sorelle. That was a fairly easy decision considering there are only 6 barrels.

Then there was a long consideration of adjusting the blend of the Tre Sorelle since we're making half our normal amount. We needed to decide if we should stick with the usual 11% Cabernet Franc, which means using half a barrel, or to use the whole barrel and increase the Cabernet Franc to 20%.

After getting out the graduated cylinder for precise measurements, we decided we preferred the higher Cabernet Franc percent since it made the wine richer and more full bodied. The 2022 Cabernet Franc is still really tannic!

The 2022 Tre Sorelle and Cabernet Sauvignon Riserva will both be released this fall to our wine club, so members, be on the lookout for them!

It's Barbera-palooza here this weekend!

We'll be pouring four of our Barberas for you to try.

2012 Barbera is mellow and smooth with rich cherry and mushroom notes.

2017 Barbera is still a little young, so slightly tannic with lots of cherry.

2019 Barbera is young and very robust with lots of sweet cherry.

2022 Barbera is the baby of the group, having just been bottled this past February. It is heavy, tannnic and in need of several years of bottle age.

Come give them all a try and see which you like the best!

Vineyard check: berry set

Not every flower that blooms makes a grape berry. These photos show the Cabernet Sauvignon grape clusters and how few of the flowers made berries. This is very common for Cab.

The very different looking cluster is Barbera. You can see that there are very few missing berries and that the berries are already much larger than the Cabernet Sauvignon.

While out in the vineyard I frequently play the game of "where's my coffee cup?" This time I was smart and left it up high on the end post so it only took me 10 minutes to find instead of half an hour.

Another weekend, another library wine!

This weekend we're revisiting the 2011 Bel'Bruzzo. Everything about this wine makes it seem like it shouldn't age well: low acidity, soft tannins, fruit forward without a lot of other strong notes.

However, all the literature from Italy about the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo says it ages beautifully for 15 to 20 years.

This wine definitely reflects that potential. At almost 15 years old it still has a full, rich mouth feel, lots of fruit and silky tannins. Since 2011 was a cooler year, it has a bright acidity that makes this wine a great pairing for any tomato-based dish.

It's the weekend again and Cathy found another tasty one!

This weekend we're pouring our 2006 Merlot. 2006 was a heavy rain year, so this wine has lots of tart cherry and very smooth tannins. It's still a rich, flavorful wine, even at 20 years old.
