CATIO WILDLIFE REPORT β€” Flower Crab Spider

This morning I walked onto the catio, pre-coffee, and found this guy hanging out on my umbrella.

A flower crab spider. Size of a dime. Legs spread wide. Just... there.
No longer needed my coffee. Instant adrenaline shot delivered.

But he's welcome.
Flower crab spiders don't build webs. They hunt. They ambush. They eat the bugs that would otherwise be eating my plants.

They're pest control with eight legs and zero salary requirements.
So as long as he gets along with the mantids I have waiting to emerge in one of the plants, we're good.

The catio has become more than a cat space. It's a whole ecosystem now. Five cats. Dozens of plants. Spiders. Mantids. The occasional hummingbird. All of us just trying to coexist in this little corner of the world I accidentally built in October.
Welcome to the team, spider. Just... maybe give me a heads up next time. πŸ•·οΈπŸŒΏ

PEPPER POTTS & MIA β€” The Mystery Box Treasures

When I ordered the 12-piece youngling plant mystery box back in October, I had no idea what I'd get.
That was the whole point. Surprise me.

But there was one plant I was hoping for: a mini rubber tree plant (Peperomia obtusifolia). I'd seen them online. Thick, glossy leaves. Compact. Hardy. I wanted one.
I opened the box.
There she was.

PEPPER POTTS
I named her after Tony Stark's partner β€” smart, resourceful, stronger than she looks. She came small. Really small. I transitioned her to semihydro in a little bee mug and she... settled in. Quietly.
For a while, I thought she wasn't growing much. No dramatic new leaves. No wild runners. Just... existing.
Then I looked back at the original photos.
She'd doubled in size. The leaves weren't multiplying β€” they were expanding. Getting bigger. Thicker. More substantial. Pepper Potts wasn't rushing. She was building.

MIA
Mia (Peperomia serpens) also came in the mystery box. I was less excited about her at first. I didn't know what she was. She seemed... fine. Just another plant.
But the more I saw peperomias at nurseries β€” big, full, thriving β€” the more I realized what she could become.
And she's proven it.
Bartleby got his teeth into her recently. Multiple leaves have holes. She didn't care. Kept growing.
A few days ago, Nightshade knocked her over while trying to get to cat grass I was seeding. I woke up to a loud crash. Mia was on her side, wilted, roots exposed.
I put her back in semihydro immediately.
By nighttime, she was standing tall again. Proud. Unfazed.
THE TREASURES
These two weren't the flashy plants in the mystery box. They weren't the ones with mythology names or dramatic backstories.
They were just... there. Quiet. Steady. Easy.
And now? They're some of my favorites.
They're hardy. Resilient. Rewarding. They survive Bartleby. They survive Nightshade. They survive my learning curve.
They're sunshiny. They make me happy.
Pepper Potts and Mia β€” the mystery box treasures I didn't know I needed. 🌿✨

SUSIE Q β€” A Love Story (Kind of)
Let me tell you about Bartleby and Susie Q.

It was love at first sight.
Susie Q β€” a Dieffenbachia, named after my mother-in-law β€” was thriving. Beautiful variegated leaves. Easy transition to semihydro. Growing like she owned the place.
And then Bartleby saw her.

THE OBSESSION
He didn't just nibble. He fixated. He came back. Again. And again. No matter where I moved her, no matter how many times I said "no," Bartleby returned like a ginger orange moth to a very toxic flame.

And here's the thing about Dieffenbachia: it's called "dumb cane" for a reason. The leaves contain calcium oxalate crystals β€” tiny needle-like structures that cause immediate mouth pain, excessive drooling, difficulty swallowing, and general "why did I do this" regret.

Bartleby did not care.
He bit her anyway.
Multiple times.

I panicked. I researched. I moved her. I scolded him. He looked at me with those green eyes and went right back.

It was like watching someone stay in a relationship they know is bad for them.

THE AFTERMATH
Look at her leaves. Those aren't natural patterns. Those are Bartleby signatures. Bite marks. Chunks missing. Scars.

She's a plant who's been through something.
But here's the twist: she never missed a beat. Two fresh new leaves at the top. Green. Unmarked. Innocent. The old leaves? Still functional. Still doing their job. Still bearing the evidence of what happened.

Susie Q survived Bartleby's love.
And Bartleby? He's fine. He napped more. He learned absolutely nothing.
He still looks at her sometimes. I see it. That longing. That "maybe just one more bite" energy. πŸŒΏπŸ’€

CHAUCER & HELIX β€” On Tending Without Attachment

Not every plant is a love story.
Some are just... here.

Chaucer and Helix came in a box I didn't curate. English ivy. Both of them. I didn't choose them. They were chosen for me.

Chaucer struggled. Hit and miss. Unhappy. I moved him to semihydro. He perked up. New leaves emerged β€” tiny at first, then expanding slowly, teaching me how growth happens differently in every plant.

I watch. I learn. I find it fascinating.
But I don't feel attached.

Helix was thriving. Then he wasn't. The longest leaf fell. No new growth since. I assume he's building roots beneath the surface, doing the work I can't see.

I wait. I monitor. I care.
But I don't feel attached.
And maybe that's okay.

Not every relationship is passion. Some are just responsibility. Some are just curiosity. Some are just the quiet act of showing up for something because it's alive and you said you would.

Maybe they'll vine. Maybe they'll grow on me β€” literally, figuratively, emotionally.

Or maybe I'll learn what my Plant Inspirations already know: you don't have to keep every plant. You can gift them. You can let them go. You can care for something without claiming it forever.

Either way, I'm here right now. So are they. We'll see what happens. 🌿

Itsy, Bitsy, Spy and Dur climbed up the spout.

Down came the chaos β€” sickness, clumsiness, plants knocked over, roots exposed.

But out came the rehab jars. The skull pots. The moon-phase planters. The second chances.

And Itsy, Bitsy, Spy and Dur? They climbed up again. πŸ•·οΈπŸŒΏ

DR. FRANK-N-FURTER β€” A Sweet Transvestite (From Tr*******al, Semihydro)

Let me tell you about Frank.
Dr. Frank-N-Furter was a lipstick plant β€” vibrant, dramatic, absolutely stunning in a tall gold planter that was a match made in heaven. The kind of pairing where you look at it and think, "yeah, that's exactly right."
Frank was thriving. Frank was gorgeous. Frank was everything.
And then I decided to transition him to semihydro.

THE FALL
I was sick. I was clumsy. I knocked over every plant I touched. Frank went into shock immediately.
But the real problem? I didn't know about the long method yet. Lipstick plants have delicate roots β€” and that I could transition them slowly, in water first for a month or two, then move to semihydro. I didn't know. I just... did it. Fast. Wrong.
Frank didn't make it.
Mostly, anyway.

WHAT REMAINS
This is Frank Jr. β€” the last surviving shoots, they're hanging on.

I'm not giving up on them. And I'm not giving up on finding another Dr. Frank-N-Furter to put back in that gold planter where they belong.

THE JANET MOMENT
I went back to SummerWinds Nursery β€” the place I got Frank originally β€” looking for a replacement. They didn't have any in stock, but the woman at checkout asked what I was looking for.
I told her about the lipstick plant. I mentioned I'd been trying to transition it to semihydro.

She grinned. "Your plant is trans?"
I paused. "Well... actually, yeah. It's named Dr. Frank-N-Furter. From Rocky Horror."

Her face lit up.
"My name is Janet."

We had a full "Dammit Janet" moment right there at the register. She told me they'd replace the plant if I brought it in. We bonded over Rocky Horror and plants and the chaos of trying to keep things alive.
It was perfect. It was exactly the kind of moment Frank would've wanted.

THE LEGACY
Frank Jr. is still here, curly and green and refusing to give up the ghost.
And somewhere out there, another Dr. Frank-N-Furter is waiting to come home to that gold planter and live the fabulous, dramatic life they're meant to live.
Don't dream it. Be it. πŸŽπŸ’„πŸŒΏ

THE BLADES β€” A Warrior's Song

Seraphina the Blade fell first,
the mother, sharp and strong.
Fury followed close behindβ€”
the flood claimed both before long.

I gave them water meant to heal,
but drowned them all the same.

The lesson cost me warriors two,
and left me holding shame.

But four remain.

Cutlass stands, tall and black,
Shard gleams gold and keen.
Sable waits, compact and dark,
Onyx holds the line between.

They survived the flood I caused.
They didn't ask for grace.

They just endured, as warriors do,
and claimed their rightful place.

The Blades don't fall for sentiment.
They ask for discipline, not care.

I learned too late what Seraphina knewβ€”
a warrior needs water, light, and air.
Cutlass, Shard, Sable, Onyxβ€”
you're the last of your line.

I won't drown you in my love.
This time, I'll let you shine. πŸ—‘οΈπŸŒΏ

STAR-LORD β€” A Guardian's Tale
THE FALL

Star-Lord was supposed to be a simple mission. Survive in Nigel's room with limited light and a window blocked by buildings and trees.
But then came Princess Mazikeen Demona. Chaos incarnate. She knocked him over. Repeatedly. Each time, he got back up.
Until the final attack. She ripped him clean out of his pot. No roots. No anchor. Just wreckage.

THE RESCUE
That's when I found him. Assessed the damage. Made a call: rehab.
Moss. A slow rebuild. No shortcuts. Just time, care, and belief he could come back.

He went to the bathroom window. Light. Space. Recovery.

Then Bartleby β€” The Jaws, the plant-nibbler β€” struck. Star-Lord had to relocate again. This time to the high shelf. Out of reach. Protected.

THE REBUILD
The roots came back slowly. Thread by thread. Sanseverias don't rush. They endure.

Star-Lord didn't have superpowers. He had one thing: persistence. The refusal to stay down. The stubborn belief that he could survive.
And he did.

Now he sits on that shelf, green and quiet, regrowing what was lost. Still standing. Still fighting.

Because that's what Guardians do. They survive. They keep going, even when the galaxy says it's over.
Star-Lord's story isn't finished. It's just getting started. πŸŒΏβœ¨πŸš€

Named after the scrappy space outlaw Nigel and I both love. Sometimes the best heroes are the ones who refuse to give up.

CHARLOTTE β€” The Youngling

Charlotte is still small. Still new. She hasn't sent out runners yet. She hasn't made babies. She's just... here. Growing. Learning what it means to be a spider plant in a world that keeps changing around her.
She came to me as a seedling β€” tiny, untested, all potential and no proof. I put her in an owl pot and she settled in. Then I discovered semihydro and asked her to change everything she knew. She shocked. She struggled. For a while, I wasn't sure she'd make it.

But she did.

Now she sits in her chunky bird pot, green and bright and still so young, and I look at her and I see what she's going to become. The web she'll weave. The life she'll create. The runners she'll send out into the world when she's ready.

She's not there yet. But she will be.
Charlotte is hope in a pot. She's proof that you can struggle, adapt, and still grow into something beautiful. She doesn't have to be fully grown to matter. She just has to keep going.

And she is. πŸ•·οΈπŸŒΏ
