NONE OF THIS HAPPENED OVERNIGHT.

Ever wonder why Budget’s wreckers started out yellow?

Where the signature flames came from?

Or how a Craigslist search in 2007 turned into the Budget you know today?

There’s a story behind all of it.

In 2007, one of the local wrecker services had closed its doors, leaving a need in the community. Andy Lewis saw an opportunity and decided to take a chance.

But first, he needed a wrecker.

So he did what you did in 2007.

He got on Craigslist.

That search took him all the way to Knoxville, Tennessee, where he bought Budget’s first wrecker, trailered it back to Oklahoma and put it to work.

A few months later, Craigslist came through again — this time with a bright yellow wrecker in Elk City.

The previous owner had painted it yellow so motorists could see him better along the highway. The paint was fresh, so Budget basically said…

Well, yellow it is.

The trucks that followed kept the yellow, and before long those wreckers became a familiar sight around Ponca City.

For the first couple of years, Craigslist was basically Budget’s fleet department.

Nineteen years later, Andy has graduated to Facebook Marketplace.

Eventually an all-black wrecker joined the fleet, and James — the paint and body guy Andy has used over the years — came up with the signature flames.

The flames stuck.

As the original yellow wreckers were retired, a little yellow stayed in those flames as a nod to where Budget started.

No marketing agency picked Budget’s colors. Sometimes that’s just how things become tradition.

OPERATING A WRECKER, YOU SEE SOME THINGS.

After 19 years, Andy has plenty of stories — including a car that hit a dip at a high rate of speed, split in half and somehow landed in the police department parking lot.

No injuries.

Once everybody is okay, that’s one you can laugh about for years.

But not every call becomes a funny story.

Christmas Eve 2009 brought a brutal Oklahoma blizzard. Budget worked from Ponca City out toward I-35, helping stranded motorists and even pulling out police cruisers.

Another towing company lost a driver that night.

Andy finally made it home in the wee hours of Christmas morning.

It’s a side of towing people don’t always see. When everyone else is trying to get off the road, wrecker drivers are often heading onto it.

Through all those calls, Budget kept growing.

Andy already knew used cars, but building Budget Auto Sales required another kind of risk.

He pretty much bet the farm on it.

Almost literally.

Andy took out a second mortgage on his own home to help fund Budget Auto Sales.

Then another need became obvious: fleet customers didn’t just need someone to tow their vehicles when they broke down. They needed someone to fix them and get them back to work.

That helped grow Budget’s repair operation.

What began at the location on 14th Street — now home to the tire shop — eventually expanded beyond fleet work to serve the general public.

As the repair side grew, Budget moved the operation to the larger shop on 1st Street, where Budget Towing & Repair has operated for the last decade.

Over the years, the customer base has grown and services including tire sales and Intoxalock installation and service have been added.

Like everything else at Budget, it didn’t happen overnight.

It grew one opportunity, one customer and a whole lot of hard work at a time.

Over 19 years, trucks have come and gone.

Employees have come and gone. Services have been added. The business has changed.

BUT THROUGH EVERY VERSION OF BUDGET, ANDY HAS BEEN THE CONSTANT.

Still answering the phone. Still dispatching calls. Still behind the wheel of a wrecker. Still checking on the repair shop and car lot.

And still pretty hard to convince he needs a day off.

Besides a wrecker, Andy’s first choice is a Chevy — although when you own a car lot, there’s really no telling what he may drive home. 😂

When somebody actually convinces him to take some time off, you’ll probably find him riding side-by-sides through the Arkansas mountains or simply spending time with his family.

Then it’s back to work.

Because businesses don’t make it 19 years because of one truck, one employee or one good year.

Somebody has to keep showing up.

And customers have to keep giving them the opportunity to.

You’ve called when you were stranded.

You’ve trusted us with your vehicles.

You’ve bought vehicles from us.

You’ve recommended us to your friends and family.

And for 19 years, you’ve given a local business the opportunity to keep growing and serving this community.

What started with a Craigslist search for a wrecker in 2007 has grown into Budget Towing & Repair and Budget Auto Sales.

The trucks look different. The business looks different. A lot has changed.

But Andy’s still answering that phone.

And, in the words of Paul Harvey…

NOW YOU KNOW THE REST OF THE STORY.

RUSSELL CANNADY | 17 YEARS TURNING WRENCHES

Russell Cannady has been turning wrenches for 17 years, but his interest in figuring out how things work started long before he landed at Budget.

He got his start working at a parts house, and before long he was buying repair manuals and learning everything he could. That interest turned into a career, and over the years Russell has worked independently and in shops around Ponca City.

Seventeen years will teach you a lot, but Russell also has something that came naturally — he’s just good at figuring things out.

He has a knack for diagnostics and troubleshooting, especially when the answer isn’t obvious. Over the years he’s honed that ability, picked up a lot of knowledge and become a pretty well-rounded mechanic.

And when you work on vehicles for that long, you see some interesting things.

Like the bunny that rode on an exhaust manifold from OKC to Ponca City — and survived.

Or the squirrel found tucked inside a bumper.

Russell is a Chevy guy, and when he’s not turning wrenches, he enjoys riding his Harley and taking bike trips with his wife, Leslie.

Russell and Leslie are members of NewPoint Church and enjoy community service projects with their church family.

And we can’t leave out his biggest automotive pet peeve:

That gas light being on.

So if Russell is working on your vehicle, do the man a favor and give him more than fumes to work with.

We’re glad to have his 17 years of experience — and his talent for figuring out the tough ones — here at Budget.

MEET TY POULTER

Ty is one of the newest faces at Budget Towing & Repair, but he’s definitely not new to working on vehicles.

Ty started turning wrenches at 15 years old alongside his dad in his shop. He later spent 18 years at Bob’s Transmission before they retired, followed by several more years at another local shop.

Altogether, Ty brings 24 years of automotive experience to Budget.

We asked him a few questions so you could get to know him a little better.

Favorite job in the shop: Brake jobs

Biggest automotive pet peeve: Dirty cars

One thing he wishes customers wouldn’t ignore: Oil changes

What does he drive? A Chevy truck.

His reasoning?

“Because who doesn’t love a Chevy?”

What’s playing while he works? Mostly country, although apparently the playlist can go just about anywhere.

Favorite food: Ribs

When he’s not working, Ty enjoys spending time with his family, especially his grandkids.

And one of his favorite automotive stories?

A vehicle was towed into the shop because it wouldn’t start. After a little investigating, they discovered someone had installed a new battery but forgot to remove the plastic cap from the terminal.

Yep. It got towed in for that.

And Ty’s professional advice for the day?

If your car starts smoking, come see us.

If Ty has worked on your vehicles over the years, you already know the experience he brings with him.

If you haven’t met him yet, stop by and say hello.

And if you’ve got something that needs looked at, give us a call.

LOCAL SUPPORTING LOCAL. 🤝

A few weeks ago, Budget Towing and our friends over at Action Towing took on quite the undertaking.

Back in June, the torrential rains swept this camper into a drainage ditch. Getting it back out wasn’t exactly your average recovery.

It turned into a two-day job, with plenty of problem solving, creative maneuvering and teamwork from both wrecker companies to get the job done.

A big thank you to our friends over at Action Towing for working alongside us on this one!

We may technically be competitors, but that doesn’t mean we can’t work together.

And we’re glad this isn’t the only kind of call we can team up on. Whether it’s pulling a camper out of a drainage ditch, lending an extra hand or helping each other out when a call requires it, it’s nice knowing two local companies can work together and still support one another.

At the end of the day, we’re both out here doing the same thing — taking care of people in our community and getting the job done.

There’s plenty of road for all of us. ❤️

WHAT’S YOUR AUTOMOTIVE HILL TO DIE ON?

Everybody has at least ONE.

Maybe you refuse to let your gas tank get below half.

Maybe your fuel light comes on and you think, “Oh, I’ve got plenty of time.” 😅

Maybe absolutely NO ONE eats in your vehicle.

Or maybe there are enough French fries under your seats to survive a small apocalypse.

Maybe you back into every parking spot.

Maybe you believe the driver controls the radio and passengers should simply be thankful they have transportation. 😂

Maybe you’re the person who changes the oil 200 miles early.

Or maybe that little sticker in the corner of your windshield has been politely reminding you since sometime around Easter. 👀

We all have that ONE automotive habit, rule, or opinion we will defend like our life depends on it.

So let’s hear yours. 👇

What’s your automotive hill to die on?

And don’t worry—we’re not here to judge.

Unless you say you drive around with the gas light on for three days. Then we might have questions. 😂

Whether you need to buy it, fix it, or tow it, Budget has you covered.
