The Colony Elimination:
Non-repellent treatments that reach and eliminate the queen are permanent for that specific colony. Once the queen is gone and workers are eliminated, that colony doesn't rebuild.

Entry Point Sealing:
Sealed access points hold indefinitely — unless physical changes to the home create new gaps.

What Causes Re-Infestation:
A new, separate colony finding an unsealed access point. Not the same colony returning — a different one finding new access.

What Shortens Treatment Longevity:
- Entry points that weren't identified and sealed
- Moisture conditions that weren't addressed
- Landscape changes after treatment that create new scout attractants

The Realistic Expectation:

Before we leave any McMinnville home, we walk through exactly this.

Days 1–3: You may see more ants. That's good.
Increased activity in the 24–72 hours after treatment is a sign the bait is working. Workers are finding it, picking it up, and taking it back to the colony. Don't spray anything during this period — you'll interrupt the process.

Days 4–7: Activity drops.
As bait reaches deeper colony levels and begins affecting larvae and the queen, the volume of visible activity reduces noticeably.

Days 7–14: Trails go quiet.
Most active trails should be inactive. Isolated scouts may still appear — that's normal at this stage.

Week 3 and beyond: Colony eliminated.
If new ants appear after Week 3, they're entering from outside through a secondary access point. This is why entry-point sealing is part of every treatment.

Odorous House Ants & Pavement Ants — Sugar feeders. Sugar-based gel baits work extremely well. Most common indoor species in the Pacific Northwest.

Carpenter Ants — Protein and fat feeders. They will not touch a sugar-based bait. Not even slightly. Using sweet bait on a carpenter ant infestation produces exactly zero results. Requires protein/fat matrix baits and targeted treatment of nesting sites in damp wood.

Pavement Ants — Opportunistic feeders. Combination approaches work, but colony location in concrete requires targeted application.

The result of misidentification: weeks of applying the wrong product and a conclusion that "bait doesn't work" — when the issue was species ID, not product quality.
