Companies don't filter, interview, or hire during the holidays? Sure they do.

Congrats to M.B.

Discussions started around Thanksgiving week (huh?). Got an offer on Christmas week - Monday, December 22nd (huh?). And a good offer despite pivoting from one function to another. Albeit industry adjacent, M.B. didn't fall for the job search myths and stated his case so well, the company decided his relevant experience "playing for the other team" will be of benefit to their "play calling and ex*****on."

Lesson reinforced. "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take," famously said by hockey legend Wayne Gretzky (though originating from his father).

I'll say it again (and again and again and again). Next week the "holiday" falls in the middle-end of the week. Should we kick back and let the week pass us by? Talk ourselves out of applying and prepping for interviews? Are we socially hungover now and will be even more so next week? Probably. I know I will be. Doesn't matter though. Just like M.B. did so well - Keep up your activity, target roles and functions in your orbit, and be the solution to a company's need.

Shout out to R.F., G.S., D.Y., A.S., and T.R. for recently receiving and accepting offers. Job offers that is. One has already started and the others start throughout December (yes, the holiday season, ohhhhh).

Each of the individuals above has a story to tell. Recruiters, job boards, company job sites, human resources, and direct to hiring managers - some required all and all required some.

Each client/candidate built and executed a strong distribution campaign, developed a narrative that was practiced and practiced some more, and accepted roles with mutual compatibility - It made sense for both them and the company.

If I've said it once, I've said it blah blah blah - Be deliberate in your job search, create your own luck, and own your own fate (as much as you can, anyway) - I know, easier said than done, but it's the only way!

Despite LinkedIn resembling Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok, Ring, Alexa, Airbnb, and WebMD it does continue to have a purpose.

This email sent to me last night says it all. Please enjoy the humble brag with a hidden message:

"Jeremy, I just wanted to thank you for the work you did. I thought I’d pass along accolades for a job well done as I’ve been contacted by quite a few recruiters on LinkedIn over the last several months and I’m not even looking. They’ve even gone as far as emailing me directly instead of through the LinkedIn chat/mail service."

Lesson: LinkedIn still works if you have a strong profile with relevant content.* Recruiters will reach out if they like what they see - Whether you are passive or active.**

* LinkedIn is NOT the only option when conducting your campaign. Be sure to diversify.

** If you are passive, be polite and ready to chat with recruiters should they reach out to you. It's good practice and you never know when you may cross paths again.

The reality of how it’s going out there...

Between yesterday and today, from a client:

Part 1:

"I wanted to thank you for all your help over the years. I have sent out my resume the last couple weeks and have had an overwhelming response- more than I ever imagined. I was offered a director of HR position for a company in _______ on Thursday- and have had multiple third and fourth round interviews. I’m currently interviewing with…" (I removed the names but 9 other companies, all diverse, none in the same industry)"

Part 2:

"________ is the company that offered me the job last Thursday. ________sent over an offer last night. I have a 3rd interview with ________ tomorrow. Speaking with ________ tomorrow morning. Also, I spoke with ________ last night and have 3 more interviews tomorrow." (Obviously waiting to hear back from the other 4 companies)

What are we learning?

To companies (recruiters, HR, and hiring mangers): Yes, hiring may be challenging right now but people want to work. Candidates are smarter and understand how valuable they are. They want to work, they want to contribute, and they want a fair part of the equation.

To candidates (especially you that are struggling): Companies are hiring. Lots of companies are hiring. Plan for 3-4 interviews, and maybe more (see above, 3rd and 4th round interviews). Seems like a lot, perhaps redundant, but companies do what they do - Sometimes it makes sense and sometimes it doesn't. Either way, if you are prepared accordingly and understand the endurance that will be required throughout the interview process, then you will perform and offers will come your way.

In the last weeks/months, our clients have been through the same process. Some more than others. Offers were made and accepted, offers were made then negotiated and accepted, offers were made and turned down, and offers were not made (lack of compatibility and all that stuff).

And this is the reality of how it's going out there…

Alcohol Infused Apple Toffee Scone

AI: Artificial Intelligence
AI: Awful Intelligence
AI: Awful Ignorance
AI: Alcohol Infused

ATS: Applicant Tracking System
ATS: Artificial Tracking System
ATS: Applicant Tricking System
ATS: Apple Toffee Scone

Call them what you want. Confuse that acronym. Have fun with it. Love it or hate it, AI, the ATS or some other technology may be part of your job search future.

Debate whether they work or not (hello all you experts out there). There’s a very good chance (almost certain) your targeted company will torture you with these technologies, portals, and platforms. Embrace the torture. Know how to customize and create your resume consistent with the job title, function, description, and qualification requirements. Know which to upload/copy and paste – And be prepared to do both.

Uploaded AND copied and pasted (smirk)? Excellent! Now keep going because starting a relationship with a computer is not the best method to determine your career fate – nor the ability to pay your rent. There’s much more to job search than click to submit and hope for the best.

Now go and enjoy an alcohol infused apple toffee scone because after reading this, you deserve it!

Great start to the week!

Got a wonderful email last evening from an amazing client. Offer made, salary negotiated, and counter accepted late last week and over the weekend.

Got a couple of others starting their searches with amazing resumes and others interviewing this week.

Although it may not feel like it, fall is upon us. Welcome to the 4th quarter of the calendar year. Where will you be in a month? During winter, what will you be doing? New job by spring? Will you be doing the same thing this time next year?

On this end we are sorting out and offering new packages. We are here to help!

Controversy!

For the record, and for clarification, we believe LinkedIn is a good place to mention vaccine status, if vaccinated. It MAY come to resumes as well but we're not quite there yet. Resumes and LinkedIn profiles are different delivery vehicles. That said, I do know of hiring managers that have seen vaccine status on resumes (this tells you they are at least being looked at).

Experts are urging caution that putting your vaccine status on your resume could help or hurt you.
