Not every flapper belongs in the Roaring Twenties. This one lives in your toilet tank. 😉

A toilet 𝗳𝗹𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗿 is the rubber or plastic seal at the bottom of the tank. When you flush, it lifts to allow water to flow into the bowl, then drops back into place to seal the opening so the tank can refill.

If a flapper becomes worn, warped, or stops sealing properly, the toilet may run or slowly leak water from the tank into the bowl.

🔧 This week’s Plumbing in Plain English term: 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘂𝘁

A 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘂𝘁 is an access point in a drain or sewer line that allows a plumber to inspect the piping or clear a blockage without taking the plumbing system apart.

Cleanouts may be located in basements, crawl spaces, garages, near fixtures, or outside the building.

🚿 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼 𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿: 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝟯 — 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝘄𝗶𝗰𝗲, 𝗢𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗢𝗻𝗰𝗲

There’s a reason that old saying has stuck around.

Before ordering a shower system, you need to know more than just, “It’s about 60 inches wide.”

For our remodel, our homeowner and 𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗞𝗔, 𝗟𝗟𝗖 measured the existing space carefully and looked at the dimensions that will matter once the old unit comes out and the new shower goes in.

A few of the measurements they checked:

📏 DEPTH: They have room to come out the full 32" needed for the new shower, even with the existing half wall.

📏 DOOR CLEARANCE: There are approximately 34" from the back wall to the nearby door trim, giving them the space needed for the planned 32" shower depth.

📏 WIDTH: The existing space measures approximately 58" wall to wall. Once wall materials and framing requirements are considered, even fractions of an inch become important.

And that’s exactly why the installer reviewed the MAAX Utile specifications before anything was ordered.

It isn’t just about whether a shower “should fit.” The rough opening, finished dimensions, wall materials, framing, drain location, plumbing and door clearance all have to work together.

They are also planning ahead for the things that will be attached later, including the folding seat, grab bars and shelving. Proper backing and placement need to be considered before the walls go up, not after.

𝘛𝘏𝘌 𝘓𝘌𝘚𝘚𝘖𝘕 𝘚𝘖 𝘍𝘈𝘙?

Measure the space. Check the product specifications. Then measure again.

Because discovering you’re short by ⅜" after everything arrives would make for a very different kind of remodeling post. 😬
