One week of literally stopping to smell the... everything. 🧠👃☕
Just finished my SCA Sensory course where we spent days sniffing our way to coffee enlightenment. We weren’t just smelling coffee, we were hacking our brains, connecting memories to flavor notes, and rewiring our neural pathways one aroma at a time.
Introduced everyone to what I call ‘Valerian’s Yoga’ (aka retronasal olfaction), because if you’re not breathing your coffee backwards through your nose while looking slightly possessed, are you even trying? 😂
The beautiful chaos of watching grown adults stick their noses in things, suddenly yelling “GRANDMOTHER’S ATTIC!” or “MY FIRST APARTMENT!” or “THAT WEIRD CANDY FROM CHILDHOOD!” while everyone else nods knowingly. These are my people.
Turns out our memories are the secret weapon to becoming better tasters. Every smell unlocks a story, every story becomes a word, and every word makes us better at this beautiful, nerdy thing we do.
To the incredible humans who joined me in this aromatic journey. Thank you for trusting the process, embracing the weird, and never judging when I made you do smell trash. You guys absolutely killed it!
Remember: Your brain has been hacked. Your palate has leveled up. Your coffee game will never be the same. Love you all ❤️❤️❤️

Quick question: Do you find consistency boring or essential? Like, is repeatability the unsexy foundation of everything good, or does it just put you to sleep?
I spent a day testing if my sample roaster actually delivers what it promises. Same coffee, same profile, ten times in a row. Measured everything. Then I kept the profile identical but swapped out the coffees.
The results made me rethink some assumptions about how this all works.
So here’s what I want to know from you do you chase consistency or does it bore you to tears? Is it the backbone of mastery or the enemy of creativity? Answer in the comments below. I’m genuinely curious where you land on this.
