Colleague: “How are you doing?”

Me & You: “Oh, I’m fine/Not bad/Pretty good/Can’t complain.”

Sometimes we want to look like we’re crushing it. We meet our deadlines, manage our calendars, and smile at meetings. Zoom smiling is easy enough, anyway.

But beneath the surface? So many of us (so many!) experience what the data calls quiet cracking: the penetratingly exhausting act of performativity (e.g., “Oh, I’m fine/Not bad/Pretty good/Can’t complain.” (yes, right: cue John Prine), while the nervous system is running on adrenaline. Our tanks are empty.

When we talk about burnout, we usually treat it like a scheduling error:

❌ “I just need better time management.”

❌ “I need to squeeze in a self-care weekend.”

Burnout is a warning, not a scheduling error. It’s a protection mechanism.

When workplace architecture is high-pressure, uncertain, or toxic (or all of the above), your internal system deploys protectors to keep you safe:

The Over-Achiever: Works late so no one would ever question your worth.

The Conflict-Avoider: Keeps you silent in meetings to dodge professional risk.

The Inner Critic: Critiques your work for you so no one else can blindside you.

These are actually fairly brilliant strategies that keep us safe in institutional spaces—but running them on high alert for years full-on drains the tank because honestly? Career growth isn’t about pushing yourself harder until you snap. It’s about building your own safety mechanisms you need to step back, ease out of high gear, and lead yourself from a grounded place.

I’ve been in higher education longer than I meant to be. I am always catching myself in performance mode while internally I’m in meltdown mode. When have you caught yourself performing “fine” while your system was screaming for a break?

A New Chapter for My Coaching Practice

After over a decade of partnering with clients to help them find their professional footing, I am thrilled to officially introduce you to Résumé Resonance.

For years, I have helped people not just write their résumés, but understand their own professional narrative. I’ve seen firsthand that when you own your story—when you move through your career transitions with clarity and grace—the empowerment that follows is profound.

I’m moving my practice into a new space, and I’m ready to help you build the tools you need to represent yourself with confidence. I don’t write your résumé for you; we work through it together, section by section, so that you hold the pen, you own the process, and you gain the skills to update it yourself, no matter where your path leads.

If you are feeling stuck, if your résumé doesn’t reflect the work you’ve actually done, or if you are ready to stop “fixing” your career and start leading it—let’s talk.

Stay tuned for more updates as I build out this space. I am so grateful to all of you who have supported my journey so far. Let’s get to work!

The new website is coming along nicely. While we wait, follow/engage with me on LinkedIn and join the Facebook group!

Career Contessa has done it again - check out this article by Danielle Doolan about different leadership styles. In your experience, what are effective leadership styles? What does impactful leadership look like? I have been in academic leadership for nearly fifteen years, and as I've grown and shifted, the most crucial lesson in leadership is to develop the ability to read the room. Because what's impactful for one person (in terms of leadership styles) is not for the other.

This article covers some great areas of effective leadership and lays out the pros and cons of various leadership styles (but remember, there is ALWAYS a gray area!); at the end of the day, impactful/effective leadership is about motivating people to meet a common goal, creating cultural buy-in, and establishing trust with the person taking on the (huge) responsibility of leadership.

Sometimes, the best way to determine your leadership style is to look around you at folks in positions of leadership. Who do you listen to? Why? Who do you trust? Why?

What has effective/impactful leadership looked like to you?

In this article, we're exploring the most common leadership styles and how each type of leader can effectively lead in an organization.

Do not allow capitalist narratives to define your worth through the idea that success is aligned solely with productivity and profit. This can lead to a fear of success, fueled by anxieties around external validation and relentless competition.

True success isn’t about material wealth but personal growth, community, and positive impact. It's an ongoing journey of self-discovery, embracing imperfections, and celebrating small wins.

Challenge these ingrained narratives and rewrite what success means for you.

We build walls to protect ourselves from fear and chaos, but these walls can hold us back. In this short piece, I explore the psychology behind wall-building and how it can lead to missed opportunities and self-doubt. I also offer strategies to break down these walls and embrace growth, including self-assessment, challenging assumptions, vulnerability, and seeking support. You’ll find links to helpful resources encouraging you to take the first step toward a life free of fear.
