We asked Lisa what she dreamed of becoming when she was growing up — and how that journey led her to where she is today. Her story is a reminder that the paths we imagine for ourselves often evolve, and sometimes the unexpected turns shape us the most.

Growing up, I was definitely a dreamer. For the longest time, I wanted to be a soap opera actress, but by the time I graduated high school, I had decided I wanted to be a dance choreographer.

Of course, life had other plans. I became a mom at 20 with the birth of my first daughter, and my priorities quickly changed. I needed a career that would allow me to support my family, and I had family who worked in property management. It seemed like a good opportunity and a career where I could grow, so I decided to give it a try.

I started out in leasing, which I really enjoyed. I was fortunate to have a Community Manager who saw that I wanted to learn and grow and took the time to cross-train me in all areas of property operations. I was eager to learn, and I took advantage of every opportunity I was given.

Over the next 26 years, I worked my way from Leasing Professional to Assistant Vice President of Operations. I've truly enjoyed each role along the way. Every position taught me something new, challenged me in different ways, and gave me the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally.

My career definitely isn't what I pictured when I was younger, but I'm grateful for where the journey has taken me. Sometimes life takes you somewhere you never expected to go—and you can end up loving where you land.

Here’s to the pivots — the unexpected turns that shape us, strengthen us, and remind us that the journey is rarely a straight line.

As a young kid my dream was to be in the NBA as a professional basketball player. When it was apparent that I would not be tall or quick enough to play in the NBA, or in college for that matter, my interests shifted to business. While at the University of Maryland, I became fascinated by finance and economics. I changed majors and pursued these fields professionally, ultimately ending up at Grady Management more than 30 years ago.'

We asked Anika Tahsin, assistant community manager at Tysons View Apartments what she wanted to be as a child and how did she end up in property management:

I wanted to be a marine biologist or a vet, oddly enough. I always loved animals and wanted to make a career out of it. I'm very spiritual, so I believe God has a funny way of taking you down different paths to help you grow in ways you need to. I've always been open to following that path, wherever it may lead. So, when life brought me to Grady Management, I got to learn more than I ever thought possible about myself both professionally and professionally. It's been a great experience thus far!'
