I wish more leaders would be tactical. We spend so much time talking strategy. And the problem with strategy is that it takes a tactician to apply it. I've said it before and I'll say it again; strategic planners are excellent at what they provide. But somewhere along the line, businesses and organizations decided that strategy was sufficient for success. When it fails, they blame the planners. Well, it's not their fault you bought into a belief that strategy alone solves your problems. It provides direction, guidance, and an end game. Now what? You have strategic people doing tactical work? This is a key point where IVA comes in. We are architects and tacticians, putting both blueprint in place for underlying structural changes, and implement those changes with precision.

This morning I was thinking about something I’ve heard in different ways from finance leaders: finance can start to feel exhausted and like the only part of the organization constantly up against deadlines. Proposals get dragged up and down the approval chain with finance in the middle. Budgets need to be finished on time or all hell breaks loose. Grant reporting is strict. Expense reports and timecards need to be chased down.

The deeper issue is that finance is expected to carry the deadline, the cleanup, and the accountability while sending the problem back through the same structure that created it in the first place. I think that is one way internal governance monopolies show up in real life. Too much accountability lands in one lane while too much control lands in another.

If finance is constantly cleaning up problems it didn’t create, that is not just pressure. It is a structural problem. If that sounds familiar, I’d take a hard look at what your structure is forcing finance to absorb.

Governance architecture is the structural arrangement of authority, decision-making, oversight, and accountability through which an organization defines value and directs action.

Most organizations don’t have a strategy problem. They have a structure problem. The people responsible for results often don’t have clear authority over the forms of value they’re expected to protect, measure, or improve. That’s where good plans go to die.

For organizations across Springfield, Central Illinois, and the broader region, that matters more than most people realize. When governance architecture is weak, strategy slows down, accountability gets muddy, and more work gets pushed onto teams that were never set up to carry it.
