Spiders are actually great little building scientists! 🕸️🏡
If you constantly find webs around your window frames, baseboards, basement rim joists, or attic ceilings, you aren't just dealing with a bug problem—you are dealing with an air leak. Spiders purposely build their webs in areas with active air currents because those drafts carry insects straight to them.
The spider web test is one of our favorite diagnostic tools to share with homeowners. When we see webs near exterior penetrations, it is an instant building science signal that you are losing conditioned air (and money!) right out of your house. Because your home is a complete system, properly air-sealing these gaps is one of the easiest ways to stop drafts and lower your utility bills.
Your house is giving you clues; you just have to know how to read them! If you want to learn how to diagnose your home like a pro, we put together the ECOcentrix Home Performance Workbook.
