I’ve come a long way!

The first time I rented an excavator was about 6 years ago - the day we closed on the farm in order to dig a path to what is now Patti’s place. I then spend the next week digging pits with Lucie Garrett HydroGeo Environmental and Ryan Reed.

While it’s fun to think about how my excavator skills have improved. It’s hard not to reflect on about that first time on the machine and how far we’ve come.

🌱 Rooted in Regeneration — and what a turnout!
This past weekend we welcomed Pedro Escudero, agronomist with Advancing Eco Agriculture (Advancing Eco Agriculture ), to Laurel Grove for a deep dive into building vineyard resilience from the soil up. No spray-and-pray here — just a holistic look at how true plant nutrition becomes a vine’s first line of defense.

We started in the organic market garden and food forest, then got our hands dirty walking through our full composting program and the different philosophies behind each method:

🪱 Vermicompost
🔬 Johnson-Su bioreactor
🔥 Thermophilic (hot) composting
🥬 Lasagna-style food waste layering

From there, into the vineyard — where we talked through our on-site bioreactor, the case for own-rooted vines, and how maximizing nutrition and photosynthesis lets the plant build its own “shield” against the pest and disease pressure Virginia is famous for.

We closed in the classroom with Pedro unpacking the AEA philosophy and just how intricate — and rewarding — a real nutritional program can be. Healthy soil, healthy vine, healthy fruit. It all connects. 🍇

We have had the verma-composting unit now for a few months. I attempted my first compost harvest, which wasn’t perfect, but believes my issue is not enough enough worms. The unit specifies a requirement of 7000 worms but in my nervousness to mess it up and kill them all - I only purchased 3000 to start.

The remaining 4000 worms have been introduced - that’s .official .
that being said my second harvest under the scope looks absolutely beautiful. So much diversity - beneficial nematodes, ciliates, flagellates, testate amoeba, fungi abound. While I still have yet to finish my CTP program, my mentor would be pleased.

Not going to lie a little proud of myself ;-)
