Seven weeks ago, we welcomed two incredible UCT Occupational Therapy students, *Unako and Hannah*, into the Autism Connect family for their block training.

From day one, they didn’t just observe — they showed up with open hearts, curious minds, and a genuine love for our kids. They got on the floor, learned the names, the stimming, the quiet smiles, the small wins that mean everything. They listened, they adapted, and they became part of the rhythm of our centre.

Today we said goodbye.

They left us with handwritten notes and chocolates for every staff member — small gestures that said so much. There were tears, hugs, and more than a few “I’m not crying, you’re crying” moments.

But here’s the truth: while block training ends, impact doesn’t.
The ideas they brought, the care they gave, the relationships they built with our learners and staff will stay with us long after today.

Unako and Hannah, thank you for choosing to spend these 7 weeks with us. Thank you for seeing our kids for who they are and meeting them there. You came as students, and you leave as part of our family.

We’re cheering you on for everything ahead. The field of OT is lucky to have you.

Once Autism Connect, always Autism Connect. 💙

Assalamu alaikum to our Autism Connect parents, staff, and followers,

On this blessed day of *Eid Al-Adha*, we want to extend our warmest wishes to you and your families.

May this Eid remind us all of the beauty in sacrifice, the strength in faith, and the joy that comes from giving and coming together. May your homes be filled with peace, your hearts with gratitude, and your tables with laughter shared with loved ones.

Thank you for the trust you place in us, for the patience you show, and for being part of our Autism Connect family. We are grateful for each of you.

*Eid Mubarak* to you and yours. May Allah accept your sacrifices, your prayers, and bring you blessings in abundance.

With love and gratitude,
The Autism Connect Team

Happy Mother’s Day to the Mums of Autism Connect 💙

To the women who love fiercely, advocate tirelessly, and notice the small moments the rest of the world might miss — today is for you.

Mothering a child on the autism spectrum asks for a kind of strength that doesn’t make the headlines. It’s in the early mornings, the meltdowns you navigate with calm, the celebrations over a new word, a shared glance, a hand in yours. It’s in the way you learn your child’s language, even when it looks different from everyone else’s.

We see the patience you practice daily.
We see the hope you hold onto, even on hard days.
We see the love that shapes every choice you make.

Thank you for trusting us to walk alongside you and your children. Your courage teaches us, and your love reminds us why this work matters.

We hope today gives you a moment to be celebrated, to breathe, and to feel deeply appreciated — not just for everything you do, but for who you are.

You are seen. You are valued. You are never alone in this.
With all our gratitude and love,

*The Autism Connect Team* 🌸

*Freedom Day | 27 April*
_“For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” – Nelson Mandela_

Today, South Africa celebrates *Freedom Day* — the day in 1994 when all of us could finally vote, choose, and dream out loud.

At Autism Connect, we know freedom looks different for everyone.

*Freedom is:*
🗣️ The right to communicate — with words, with AAC, with art, with a smile
🚪 The right to access — schools, jobs, transport, public spaces
🎨 The right to create and be seen as more than a diagnosis
💙 The right to choose your own life, at your own pace, with the support _you_ ask for

*We stand on the shoulders of giants.*
Today we honour the organisations and activists who paved the way for disability rights in SA:

*The Western Cape Forum For Intellectual Disabilities* — for decades of advocacy, training, and making sure autistic voices reach Parliament
*Disabled People South Africa (DPSA)* — who fought under apartheid and after for “Nothing About Us Without Us”
*Down Syndrome South Africa* — for championing inclusion in schools and workplaces
*The Chaeli Campaign* — for showing the world that mobility aids are freedom tools
*National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities* — for policy change that impacts real lives
And countless parents, self-advocates, and teachers who refused to accept “no” for an answer

Because of them, our young adults could hold their first art exhibition on Saturday and our little ones have access to individualised support.
Because of them, a ballot is not the end of freedom — _access_ is.

*Freedom is still unfinished.*
Many disabled South Africans still wait for accessible taxis. For jobs without stigma. For schools that don’t say “we’re full”.

So today we celebrate. Tomorrow we keep working.

Freedom means _all of us_. Until then, none of us are truly free.

*How are you celebrating freedom today?* 👇

Thank You For Making History With Us

To our Autism Connect families, friends, and community —

Today, you did something extraordinary.

You showed up.

Because you came to our First Ever Young Adults Art Exhibition, our young adults got to experience something many never thought possible: being seen, being celebrated, being proud.

That’s what you gave them.

To every parent who rearranged Saturday plans...
To every sibling who cheered the loudest...
To every friend who bought a raffle ticket, asked questions, and lingered at each canvas...

Thank you.

You didn’t just attend an exhibition. You told 10 young adults: “Your voice matters. Your work has value. You belong here.”

Special thanks to:
🏆 Our raffle prize winners — enjoy your well-earned treats!
🎨 Rehoboth Church Hall for welcoming us so warmly
💙 And our young artists — you were brave, brilliant, and you made us so proud

This was the first. It won’t be the last.

With full hearts and deep gratitude,
The Autism Connect Skills Centre Team

P.S. Photos coming soon. But honestly? No picture captures what it felt like to pack that hall with love.

*Important Update: New Venue for Saturday’s Art Exhibition* 🎨

Hi Autism Connect families,

Quick update about our *Young Adults Art Exhibition this Saturday, 10am-12pm*.

*New Venue:*
📍 *Rehoboth Church Hall*
_Blueberry Lane, Strandfontein_

We’ll share a *live location pin* in this group on Saturday morning to make finding it easy.

*Why the change?*
We were unfortunately unable to secure _3 Bears Educate Main Hall_ due to unexpected venue costs. Rather than pass that cost on or postpone, we’ve moved to Rehoboth Church Hall so our young adults can still have their exhibition as planned.

*What stays the same:*
✅ *Date & Time:* This Saturday, 10am–12pm
✅ *Fragrance-free space + quiet break room available*
✅ *Wheelchair accessible with parking on-site*

We know last-minute changes aren’t ideal, and we appreciate your understanding. Our team will be at the venue on Saturday morning with signs to help anyone who misses this message.

*This is still their moment.* After months of creating, our young adults deserve a packed hall. Let’s show up for them 💙

Please reply *“SEEN”* so we know you’ve got the new details.

With gratitude,
_The Autism Connect Team_

Our young adults have been pouring their hearts into something special ✨

For weeks, the Skills Centre studio has been buzzing — paint on hands, music in the background, and that quiet focus that happens when you’re making something you’re proud of.

Every canvas tells a story. Of courage. Of growth. Of voices finding colour and shape.

Our Young Adult Art Exhibition is almost here, and we would LOVE to see you there!
Come celebrate the artists. Come see the work. Come feel the pride in the room.

Because when our community shows up, our artists shine even brighter 🌟 all welcome!
