In South Africa, your consent is required before a credit check can be conducted. It is typically requested when the role you’re applying for involves a level of risk and responsibility.
A credit check usually applies when you are:
• Applying for finance-related roles
Jobs in banking, finance, insurance or any role handling money may require a credit check because your financial behaviour can indicate risk.
• Positions with financial control
If you will be managing budgets, payments, procurement or company funds, employers may assess your credit history.
• Roles with access to sensitive data or assets
According to South African best practice (and aligned with the National Credit Act), checks are used where there’s legitimate business risk.
For job seekers this means that although good credit is a good to have, poor credit does not automatically disqualify you, but it can raise concerns depending on the role.
