If you own a lithium-ion battery extinguisher or are planning to buy one, please read this carefully. Your safety, your compliance, and your insurance cover depend on it!
Right now, there are ONLY TWO certified lithium extinguishers in South Africa that have officially passed and hold the mandatory SANS 1910 and NTA 8133 testing standards.
What does this mean for you?
๐Ÿšซ It is ILLEGAL to sell or refill any other lithium extinguisher in South Africa.
๐Ÿ›‘ They CANNOT be serviced. Legitimate fire equipment technicians are legally prohibited from servicing uncertified units.
โš ๏ธ Your insurance WILL REJECT your claim. If a fire occurs and you are relying on an uncertified unit, your insurance company will not cover the damages.
Do not be fooled by cheap knock-offs or smooth sales pitches. Many sellers are pushing products by claiming they have "international certification." Letโ€™s be clear: international certifications mean absolutely nothing for local compliance. If a unit doesn't hold the required SANS 1910 and NTA 8133 certifications, it is strictly not allowed to be sold or used in South Africa.
Don't compromise on protecting your lives and your assets. Always demand concrete proof of local SANS and NTA compliance before purchasing!

Yesterday, while preparing to host 60 members of Ekurhuleni Fire Department management for a Fireblock demonstration, we received an unexpected call for assistance involving a shipping container containing lithium-ion batteries.

What happened next demonstrated exactly why experience, technology and collaboration matter.

Following our previous experience with a lithium-ion battery container fire, it was incredibly encouraging to see how much knowledge and expertise has developed. This time, the container manufacturer, battery manufacturers, fire specialists and Fireblock team worked together, sharing information, listening carefully to the warning systems and using the available technology to identify the compromised battery.

The result? We located the problem before it became a major incident.

This is what modern lithium-ion fire management should look like.

It isnโ€™t about one company having all the answers. It is about manufacturers, fire services, engineers, specialists and technology providers working together, learning from every incident and continuously improving how we detect, manage and suppress these extremely complex fires.

Lithium-ion batteries are not going away. They are becoming part of our everyday lives โ€” from energy storage and electric vehicles to industrial applications and logistics.

Our approach cannot remain stuck in yesterdayโ€™s firefighting methods.
