October 1997. A new music channel went on air on DStv. Channel O was made for young viewers and played local and international music videos. 📺

Over the years it has covered kwaito, hip hop and amapiano, giving each sound a screen. It also runs the Channel O Music Video Awards, which honour music videos from across Africa.

It turned 25 in 2022 and is still on DStv channel 320. 🎶

Tell us in the comments: which video did you wait for? 👇🏾

Every party has two kinds of people. Some stand right at the DJ booth, close enough to see every move and shout the song title at the DJ. Others find a spot at the back with a drink and watch the whole room fill up. 🎧

Neither is wrong, and plenty of us swap halfway through the night. We just want to know where you stand.

Tell us in the comments: right at the DJ booth or back of the room? 👇🏾

1980. Roland released a drum machine called the TR-808 Rhythm Composer, and it didn't sell. 🥁

It cost about US$1,200, and musicians wanted something that sounded like a real drummer. The 808 didn't. Its kick and snare sounded nothing like real drums, so it flopped, and Roland made only about 12,000 before it stopped making them.

That's where the story turns. Second-hand 808s got cheap, and young producers who couldn't afford much else picked them up. In 1982 it was on Marvin Gaye's Sexual Healing and Afrika Bambaataa and the Soulsonic Force's Planet Rock. Today that boom sits under a huge amount of hip hop and dance music. 🔊

The machine that flopped ended up on the floor at every party you've been to. Which song with that 808 boom takes you straight back? Tell us in the comments. 🎶

The flyer has a start time. The group chat says "leaving now". And then there's what really happens. 😅

Some of us are there for the first song. Some of us walk in for the last two hours and still make it count. No judgement here, we just want to know.

Be honest with us. What time do you actually get to the party? 🕐
