During National Reconciliation Week, we acknowledge the histories, cultures, knowledge, and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

It is a time to listen and learn with humility, reflect on the past, and strengthen our commitment to respect, understanding, and meaningful change.

In aged care, meaningful support begins with respect, understanding, and cultural safety. Every person deserves to feel seen, valued, and connected to their identity and community as they age.

This week is an opportunity to reflect on how we can continue creating safer, more compassionate spaces, not only for physical care, but for emotional well-being and mental health too.

Real change begins with listening, learning, and walking forward together 🤝

Because many older Australians grew up in a time when mental health wasn’t openly discussed, it can feel difficult to talk about what’s really going on.
But struggling does not mean weakness.
And you do not have to “just get on with it.”

In this month’s blog, we explore:
🌿 the signs your mental health may need support
🌿 why mental health changes can become more
common as we age
🌿 gentle ways to care for yourself or support someone
you love

Looking after your mental wellbeing is just as important
as looking after your physical health 💜

For many families, aged care isn’t something they plan for early.

It often begins with a small shift, a fall, a missed medication, or the moment you realise things aren’t as easy as they used to be.

And suddenly, you’re making decisions in the middle of uncertainty.

If you’re in that place right now, you’re not alone.

Starting the conversation earlier, even in small, gentle ways, can create space to understand your options, ask questions, and move forward with more confidence.

There’s no perfect time to begin.

But starting sooner can make the journey feel a little less overwhelming 💜

For many families, aged care conversations begin long before any official process starts. They begin with concern, uncertainty, and the pressure of wanting to do the right thing.

Along the way, it’s easy to absorb beliefs that create more stress than clarity.
Things like feeling you should manage everything yourself… or believing asking for support means your parent is losing independence.
The truth is, support can create more choice, more safety, and more peace of mind for everyone.

These are a few common myths I hear often and gentle truths that may help lighten the load 💜

For many older Australians, their stories hold courage, sacrifice, and resilience.
Some carry visible reminders of service. Others carry experiences that may never be seen, but are felt every day.

Today is a moment to pause, reflect, and acknowledge all they have given.
We remember with gratitude.
We honour with respect.

Lest we forget. 🌺

Life brings many transitions, and needing aged care support can be one of them.
For many families, it begins quietly.
Small changes. Subtle shifts. Moments that feel different.
And then, suddenly, you’re navigating decisions you never expected to face.
This stage can feel overwhelming, for both you and the person you love.

Because while these moments can feel like everything is changing…
With the right support, people can still find their way — and feel like themselves again 💜

What does good health look like as we age?

Health isn’t just physical.

It’s feeling supported.
It’s maintaining dignity.
It’s having the right care at the right time.

Today is a reminder that well-being takes many forms, especially as we grow older.
Happy World Health Day! 🌏

Sometimes, families come to me feeling completely overwhelmed by the aged care system.
So much information.
So many decisions.
And often, very little clarity.
Eva shared her experience after supporting her parents through this process and how even one conversation helped bring a sense of direction and calm.
I’m grateful to be able to support families in finding their way forward 💜

We don’t always notice ageism, because it often shows up in small, everyday moments.

In the words we use.
In the assumptions we make.
In the jokes we don’t think twice about.

Over time, these small moments can shape how older people see themselves and how they are treated by others 😢

In this month’s blog, I explore the quieter side of ageism, why it matters, and how even the smallest shifts in awareness can begin to change the way we think about ageing. Read more about this blog here: https://sunbirdagedcare.com.au/ageism-matters/

I invite you to pause and reflect 🌿
Because sometimes, one small change is all it takes to start a ripple 💜💦
