⚠️ Would you trust an email if it really came from someone you know?

That's exactly what made a recent phishing email we examined so convincing.
The email appeared to come from a genuine business associate and contained his normal business details and professional signature.

The message included an attachment and there were several comments in the message to convey a sense of urgency - that ol' red flag!

We investigated it without opening the document in the normal manner and confirmed our suspicions - this was a phishing attempt.

The important lesson is that checking the sender's email address is no longer enough. If someone's genuine email account has been compromised, a malicious message can potentially arrive from the address you've trusted for years.

Remember:
🔹 Was I expecting this document?
🔹 Why is it urgent?
🔹 Does the request make sense?
🔹 Why am I suddenly being asked to log in?
🔹 Can I telephone the sender and check?

Our simple rule:
Unexpected + urgent + link or attachment = verify independently before you act.

Scams are getting smarter — and the old warning signs aren't enough anymore.

For years we've been told to look for spelling mistakes, bad grammar and suspicious-looking emails.

Unfortunately, artificial intelligence is changing that.

Modern scam messages can be polished, professional and extremely convincing. Recent ANZ data shows scam activity increased 18% year-on-year, while Australians reported $2.18 billion in combined scam losses during 2025.

For seniors, families and small businesses, the safest approach is increasingly:
🛑 STOP — Don't let urgency force you into acting.
🔎 CHECK — Independently contact the bank, supplier or organisation using contact details you already trust.
🛡️ PROTECT — Never give an unexpected caller remote access to your computer, your password, PIN or one-time security code.

For businesses, introduce one particularly important rule:
Never accept changed supplier banking details by email alone. Verify them independently before making payment.
