Greg was a giant of the Tasmanian visual and performing arts scenes. His innovation as GM and Artistic Director of Theatre North was extraordinary to see. Also a lovely fellow who was unapologetically himself. An inspiration to all. Vale Greg.
Theatre North is saddened by the passing of former General Manager and Artistic Director, Greg Leong.
Greg was a force of nature.
During his tenure at Theatre North, Greg embraced the notion that the theatres are places for excitement and drama and laughter, and he enlivened our stages with big, bold, exhilarating programming.
Ever the entertainer, Greg developed the Friends of Theatre North program to reinforce the social aspects of theatre going and produced several gala events that are remembered very fondly indeed. Also remembered are his dinner parties, his amazing sense of fashion and his quest to banish boredom from all corners of life.
His contributions to Launceston were informed by his trail-blazing work at the Burnie Arts Centre and we extend our condolences to those on the North West who were in his orbit. Similarly, his time with Tasmanian Regional Arts and the University of Tasmania touched many.
We also acknowledge his pioneering cross-disciplinary work as a visual and performance artist. His astute interrogations of ethnicity, history, visual art, masculinity and performance stand apart and alongside his time with us as our General Manager.
While we leave others to flesh out this huge aspect of Greg’s life, we know this work was held in very high regard and his rich life history imbued his approach to creating communities.
In later years, Greg was an fervent supporter of Launceston’s cultural life, and we are all so grateful of his time within it.
We extend our sincere condolences to Greg’s friends and family.
Vale Greg.
