His sister, Lady Townsing, applied for his medals in 1992, hence the later naming style.

Sergeant Ronald Giles Daniel was born in Oakleigh, Victoria, Australia on 9/9/1919. His father was a Boer War and WW1 veteran. Pre war he was working as a clerk when he enlisted into the Royal Australian Air Force as Air Crew on 7/12/1940.

After attending various training courses, he qualified as a Pilot on 16/9/1941. He was posted to 70 O.T.U. (Operational Training Unit) in Kenya on 30/1/1942.

He was flying a Bristol Blenheim IV (serial number V6245) when he was killed on 23/4/1942. The aircraft crashed into high ground near Naivasha, Kenya, during a navigation exercise conducted in poor weather conditions. All three crew members aboard—Sergeants Daniel, John Arthur Ahern (400909), and Norman George Peters (404597)—lost their lives in the accident. All three men are buried at Gilgil War Cemetery in Kenya.

The court of inquiry found the blame for the crash was due to Daniel disobeying orders.
