Termite swarming season is getting underway!
Despite the cooler spring temperatures, the current wet conditions are encouraging termite activity across the Tweed Valley and Northern Rivers.
We’ve spotted some termite alates (winged reproductive termites), a sign that established colonies are beginning to release their future kings and queens.
These winged termites leave their colonies to find mates and establish new colonies. While swarms are more commonly associated with warm, humid weather, suitable conditions can trigger flights even during cooler spring weather.
Finding winged termites outdoors isn’t necessarily cause for concern, but large numbers emerging from a building or discarded wings indoors are worth investigating.
As spring progresses and temperatures rise, expect to see more of these fascinating insects!
