🇸🇬Travelling to Singapore? Don’t let its “cashless city” reputation catch you out.

Cards are accepted almost everywhere in Singapore’s malls, hotels and major attractions but some of the best local experiences are much easier with Singapore dollars in your wallet.

🍜 Cash gives you more choice at hawker centres
Many traditional hawker stalls and neighbourhood coffee shops don’t accept international Visa
or Mastercard payments. Some offer local QR payments, but these aren’t always
straightforward for overseas visitors.
💡 Travel Tip: Don’t wait until you’re standing in front of a plate of chicken rice to discover the
stall only accepts cash.

💵 Bring smaller Singapore dollar notes
S$2, S$5 and S$10 notes are useful for hawker meals, drinks, markets and smaller neighbourhood businesses. Large notes can be inconvenient when you’re only buying a coffee or snack.
💡 Travel Tip: Ask for a mixture of smaller notes when getting your Singapore dollars before
departure.

🥤 Cash solves the unexpected payment problems
Travellers regularly report foreign cards being rejected by certain vending machines, drink shops and small retailers, even when another type of card is accepted.

Street taxis may take cards, but terminals can occasionally be unavailable, and card payments
may involve additional charges. Cash means you aren’t left searching for another payment option.

💰 How much cash should you take?
For a short Singapore trip, around S$100–S$150 per person is a practical starting point. Consider carrying more if hawker food, local markets and neighbourhood exploration are a major part of your itinerary.

✅ Bring cash before you leave Australia.
✅ Carry smaller notes for food and drinks.
✅ Keep cash available for taxis and card problems.
✅ Take a travel card and a separate backup card too.

Need Singapore dollars before your trip? Check RedRate’s current exchange rate before you fly.
📌 Save this before your trip—future you will thank you.

Traveling to Turkey soon? Before you exchange money, here’s what every first-time traveller should know.

💶 Don’t assume euros or US dollars are the best choice.
Hotels, tour companies and shops in places such as Istanbul, Antalya and other tourist areas
may accept euros or US dollars. However, paying
in foreign currency can cost more than paying in Turkish lira.
Outside the main tourist areas, expect to need lira for local cafés, markets, transport and smaller
businesses.
💡 Extra tip: Don’t buy euros or US dollars specifically for Turkey. If you already have US cash,
be aware that some Turkish banks and exchange offices may refuse US$50 and US$100 notes
due to concerns about counterfeits.

💳 Use a three-part travel wallet
Take:
✅ A travel card such as Wise or Revolut
✅ A separate backup bank card
✅ Some Turkish lira in cash
Cards are widely accepted in major cities and tourist destinations, but foreign cards don’t always
work in taxis. Cash becomes more important when visiting villages, rural areas and smaller
independent businesses.

🏧 At the ATM, always choose Turkish lira
An ATM may offer to convert the withdrawal into Australian dollars for you. Decline that option
and continue the transaction in TRY. Otherwise, the Turkish ATM provider chooses the
exchange rate and any associated conversion costs.
Always check the withdrawal fee before confirming.

🤝 Keep smaller lira notes for tipping
At sit-down restaurants, leaving around 5–10% is common when a service charge hasn’t
already been added. Taxi drivers generally don’t expect a percentage tip; simply round up the fare.

Tips are usually left in cash, preferably Turkish lira. Visiting a traditional hammam? A tip of
roughly 10–20%, shared among the attendants, is customary.

✈ The best strategy?
Bring enough lira from Australia for your arrival, transport and first day. Then use a combination
of cash and card throughout the trip rather than relying entirely on either one.

Need some Turkish lira before departure? Check RedRate’s current exchange rate before you
fly.

📌 Save this before your trip—future you will thank you.

✈ Travelling to Europe soon? Before you exchange your money, here’s what every first-time
traveller should know. 💶

💳 1. Don’t rely on just one payment method
Travel cards like Wise or Revolut can be great for everyday spending, but they’re not perfect.
Cards can be declined, ATMs can be unavailable, and phones run out of battery.
💡 Travel Tip: Take at least two payment methods so you’ve always got a backup.
💶 2. Bring some local cash before you leave
Having cash when you land means you can pay for taxis, public transport, small cafés or tips
without hunting for an ATM after a long flight.
💡 Travel Tip: You don’t need your entire holiday budget in cash—just enough to get you
through your first day or two.
🏧 3. Be careful when withdrawing cash overseas
Many ATMs ask whether you’d like to be charged in your home currency. It might sound
convenient, but it often results in a worse exchange rate.
💡 Travel Tip: If given the choice, select the local currency and let your card provider handle
the conversion.
💰 4. Airport exchange counters aren’t always your best option
Airport exchanges are convenient, but convenience can come with a less competitive exchange
rate.
💡 Travel Tip: If you need cash at the airport, consider exchanging only enough to cover your
immediate expenses.
🗺 5. Every destination is different
Some European cities are almost completely cashless, while others still have markets, cafés
and family-run businesses that prefer cash.
💡 Travel Tip: Carry a small amount of local currency, even if you expect to pay by card most of
the time.

✅ Quick recap:
• Take a travel card and a backup card.
• Bring a little cash before you fly.
• Don’t exchange your whole holiday budget at the airport.
• Keep some local currency with you, just in case.

✈ Save this before your trip—future you will thank you.
