Most trade businesses don't need a bigger title. They need better leaders.

One of the biggest hiring mistakes is looking at what the biggest companies are doing and thinking your business needs the same.

Kane shares why bringing in someone "above everyone else" has never worked at Smartfix. The people who have made the biggest impact came in ready to learn the business, grow with the team, and earn the leadership role over time.

For most trade businesses, promoting from within builds stronger leaders than hiring over the top.

Sometimes the biggest opportunities are the ones you don't even know exist.

That's what I took away from this conversation with Dan from Fundd.

When we first learnt that a self-managed super fund could be used to purchase commercial property that your own business could operate from, it completely changed the way we thought about investing.

It wasn't just about buying property.

It was about understanding there were options we'd never been exposed to before.

I think that's one of the biggest advantages of having conversations with people who specialise in different areas of business.

Not because they'll always have the answer.

But because they'll often show you possibilities you didn't know to ask about.

Some investments don't just change your business.

They change your mindset.

This part of the conversation with Dan from Fundd really got me thinking about the impact of getting an office.

For him, it wasn't about having a nicer place to work.

It was about creating a space where he could focus, remove distractions, and take the business seriously.

I've found it's often decisions like these that create the biggest shifts.

Not because they instantly make you more profitable.

But because they change the way you show up every day.

Sometimes the next stage of growth starts with changing your environment.

Loyalty is a great quality.

Until it stops you asking better questions.

It got me thinking about how many business owners stick with the same bank simply because it's what they've always known.

Not because they've checked if it's still the best option.

The truth is, businesses change.

Your goals change.
Your cash flow changes.
The way you borrow changes.

What worked five or ten years ago might not be the right fit today.

I think this applies to more than just banking. Whether it's your systems, suppliers, or the way you run your business, it's worth challenging the assumption that what got you here is still what's best for where you're going.

This episode challenged the way I think about growth.

There's nothing wrong with building a business that scales internationally.

There's also nothing wrong with building a business that gives you the freedom to be home for dinner with your kids.

For a long time, it felt like success was measured by headcount, revenue, or how fast you were growing.

The longer I've been in business, the more I think success looks different for everyone.

The goal isn't to build the biggest business.

It's to build the business that gives you the life you actually want.

The best businesses don't start with a product.

They start with a problem.

In this episode, Isabelle from shared the story behind a product that helps people keep their plants alive by monitoring what they need and feeding that information back through an app.

The technology is impressive.

But that's not what made it a good business idea.

It started with a simple question: What problem are we actually solving?

Too many businesses fall in love with the solution before they've properly understood the customer.

The founders who get it right usually do the opposite. They obsess over the problem first, then build something people genuinely want.

Growth isn't always about getting bigger.

Sometimes it's about getting better.

What stood out to me in this conversation with Isabelle from was how much changed when we stopped trying to do everything.

The team got smaller.

The business became more focused.

And profit improved because we doubled down on what we were genuinely great at.

It's a good reminder that saying yes to every opportunity isn't always the path to growth.

Sometimes the biggest gains come from having the confidence to say, "This is what we do best."

Customers notice that too.

There's a big difference between being good at lots of things and being known for one thing.

Most people don't leave because of one bad day.

They leave because of a hundred conversations that never happened.

One thing that really stood out to me in this conversation with Louis from was how much they prioritise getting the whole team together every Monday morning.

Not because it's the most productive use of two hours.

Because communication is.

They'd rather spend time talking, checking in, and giving people the chance to raise issues before they become bigger problems than lose a great team member because nobody asked how they were going.

The longer I've been in business, the more I've realised that leadership isn't just about solving problems.

It's about creating an environment where people feel comfortable bringing them up in the first place.
