The effects of climate change are seen every day in the weather we experience, the strain on infrastructure and the increasing pressure on the natural systems that support our cities.

This World Environment Day is an opportunity to focus on practical progress and the positive role the construction industry can play in driving climate solutions. Across design, delivery and operation, there is growing potential to rethink traditional approaches and embed low carbon and more resilient ways of building.

From early design decisions that reduce embodied carbon, to improving operational energy performance over a building’s lifecycle, to selecting materials with lower environmental impact, the industry has clear and achievable pathways to reduce whole life carbon. Advancements in construction methods, digital tools and circular economy principles are also helping reshape how projects are planned and delivered.

By continuing to review and improve how we build, the industry can support lower emissions, greater resilience and stronger, more efficient cities.

As a follow on from our previous article on the challenges New Zealand are seeing, this piece turns to Australia where fuel escalation is no longer a background economic variable, but a live and escalating pressure shaping construction delivery in real time.

Sustained increases in diesel pricing, combined with ongoing geopolitical instability and tightening global supply conditions, are now flowing directly through construction projects. The impact is being felt not only in plant and site operations, but across transport, logistics and materials, where energy inputs are increasingly embedded within core production and delivery costs.

What was once treated as short-term volatility is now emerging as a structural cost driver. Fuel-linked adjustments, shorter pricing validity windows, and more frequent supplier repricing are becoming embedded features of the procurement landscape, compounding broader inflationary pressures already present across the sector.

Our latest article, “Construction Under Pressure: Fuel Escalation and Its Commercial Impacts”, explores these dynamics in detail, examining how fuel risk is transmitting through the construction supply chain and what this means for cost certainty, procurement strategy and programme delivery in today’s market.

Today we are recognising a 5 year milestone for Maurice Bitar at SJA.

Maurice is one of those rare engineers who brings deep experience, sharp judgement and a genuinely steady presence to even the most complex forensic structural challenges. With more than 23 years in the industry, he has built a career around understanding how structures behave in the real world.

He has worked across an impressive range of projects, including commercial, retail, defence, aged care, and residential, and has developed a level of intuition that only comes from years spent close to both design and construction. Whether it is reinforced concrete, post tensioning, precast, steel, composites or masonry, Maurice has a way of cutting through complexity and getting to the right answer.

Beyond the technical, Maurice regularly steps into expert reporting and testifying work, where his clarity, composure and credibility really stand out.

In a forensic structural engineering team known for tackling difficult problems, Maurice is a steady anchor - the person you are very glad to have in the room when things get complicated. He is thoughtful, experienced and always brings a bit of perspective when it is needed most, often with a quiet sense of humour that lands at just the right time.

5 years of impact, insight and steady contribution.

Congratulations Maurice.

It was a privilege for SJA’s Asia team to co-host last Thursday’s webinar with RICS and Pinsent Masons on disruption claims in construction projects.

Thank you to everyone who joined and contributed to a focused discussion on how disruption is identified, evidenced and assessed in practice - including its relationship with delay, common analytical approaches such as productivity and measured mile methodologies and the importance of robust contemporaneous records.

Sincere thanks to our speakers, Connor Clark, Maximilian Benz and Zdravko Kuruzović for sharing legal and expert perspectives drawn from complex international disputes and forensic analysis.

We are also grateful to RICS and Pinsent Masons for their collaboration in delivering the session.

We look forward to continuing the discussion on this important area of construction dispute resolution.

Today we celebrate a defining moment in the SJA story as our Founder, Steve Abbott, formally concludes this chapter of business ownership and steps into his new director role governing RSK Australia.

We also take this moment together, with Steve joined by his loving family and the entire SJA team across every office connected live on Teams. A genuine reflection of what SJA has always been built on: people, connection and shared purpose.

From day one, Steve set out to change the way construction advice is delivered. Built from experience on the tools and across the full project lifecycle, he created SJA on a simple but powerful belief: better outcomes come from practical thinking, clear advice and doing what is right, not what is easy.

That belief became the foundation of SJA.

Today, SJA stands as a trusted partner globally, known not just for what we do, but how we do it. Integrity in decision making. Clarity in advice. Discipline in delivery. And a commitment to standing alongside clients from start to finish.

Just as importantly, Steve built a team and a culture that carries those standards every day. A group of specialists who combine technical excellence with genuine care for outcomes and who continue to raise the bar on every project.

What Steve has created is bigger than a business. It is a standard. A mindset. A way of working that continues to define SJA today and into the future.

Steve, your impact is visible in every office, every project and every success story. You set the direction, shaped the culture and built the foundation we continue to stand on with pride.

Today we recognise and celebrate that legacy and the momentum it continues to create.

Pleased to share SJA’s recent involvement providing end-to-end Project Management services for the successful completion of base building fitout works at Hello Molly’s industrial warehouse in the wholesale fashion precinct of Alexandria, NSW premises.

The engagement was overseen by Ben Marshall, Regional Manager Expert and Project Management Services at SJA and led by Brian Coughlin, Senior Advisor at SJA, who provided comprehensive project management support across planning, delivery and governance functions.

SJA’s role encompassed full project lifecycle management, with key responsibilities including:

• Project governance, reporting and client advisory throughout delivery

• Scope definition, coordination and change management across base building and tenant requirements

• Programme and delivery oversight, including monitoring of milestones and critical path activities

• Cost and risk management, ensuring alignment with project objectives and stakeholder expectations

• Coordination of design consultants and services engineers across all disciplines

• Interface management between landlord works, contractors and tenant stakeholders

• Quality assurance and construction phase monitoring to support compliance and delivery standards

The successful completion of the base building fitout works has established a coordinated and robust platform for Hello Molly’s next stage fitout works, enabling a smoother transition into tenancy works with reduced interface risk and improved delivery certainty.

SJA is pleased to have supported Hello Molly in delivering this important milestone within their Alexandria expansion.

Across Australia, our teams recently took part in Cancer Council Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, joining many others in support of an important cause.

A cuppa, something sweet and a shared moment turned into a meaningful effort that helped raise over $1,000 in support of the Cancer Council’s work in cancer research, prevention and essential support services for individuals and families across the country.

Support also came in from SJA’s teams in Singapore and New Zealand, extending the sense of connection across borders and reflecting the shared nature of the initiative.

A sincere thank you to everyone who took part and supported Cancer Council Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. Every contribution helps support work that makes a real difference.
