Work pressure caused around 4,500 serious mental stress claims in Australia in 2024-25, making job demands one of the most common psychosocial hazards employers need to manage.

The Code of Practice defines high job demands as intense or sustained high mental, physical or emotional effort required to do the job. It also covers the other end of the scale, where work is monotonous, repetitive or under-stimulating.

In our technical briefing, psychologist Kelly Hunt drew a clear line between the occasional late night or early start and a sustained, excessive workload. It is the latter that leads to fatigue and, over time, disengagement.

Swipe through to see what it looks like and how to manage it.

In light of Mental Health Month, we’re featuring our series on the 17 psychosocial hazards recognised in Australia’s WHS Codes of Practice, sharing insights from our technical briefing with workplace lawyer James Mattson and psychologist Kelly Hunt.

Mental health claims have risen 169% since 2014-15 and now make up 12.2% of all serious workers’ compensation claims, with a median of 34.8 weeks off work per claim.

Since our live technical briefing, the stakes have only grown.

Every October, NSW marks Mental Health Month as a reminder to make our mental health and wellbeing a priority.

The 2026 theme is A Little Connection Goes a Long Way, which spotlights the difference that small, ordinary moments of connection can make to how we feel.

Connection doesn’t look the same for everyone, and each person can find it in a way that feels safe and comfortable.

If you would like to help your people feel more confident initiating these conversations this MHM, let’s talk.

The stigma surrounding mental health in the workplace has far-reaching effects both professionally and personally, yet discussions on the topic often remain entirely taboo.

Breaking this cycle starts with speaking up. Telling a colleague or a manager when you’re struggling shows the people around you that they are not alone.
