How do you feel about council bin checks? 👀

I’ll admit it — I felt a mild pang of anxiety this morning seeing tags on all the freshly emptied bins. Imagine working in the biz of helping our community recycle right... and finding something had gone awry in MY bins? 😬

Maybe a passer-by popped something in after we’d put them out (that old excuse). Maybe one of my teenagers put the wrong thing in the FOGO just to stir me up (it happens to the best of us).

Relief: all clear, still model recyclers 😌

What struck me was the tagging style! This time it was a subtle tick, so every bin looked the same — you’d need a close look to spot who’d slipped up.

Last time it was bright green smileys and red sad faces you could spot from a moving car. Two very different approaches to the same feedback.

So we’d love to know:
🏡Residents — how do bin checks make you feel? Learnt anything from a tag on your bin?
🏛️Councils — how have you approached bin tagging, and what’s worked (or hasn’t)?

You never know what someone else might be on the lookout for, and you might even find something for yourself while you’re there 👀

Can you spot the three items in this photo can NOT be recycled? Plastic edition. ♻️

We're here to help you sort fact from fiction when it comes to your recycling.

Here's what you can ✅ and can't ❌ recycle when it comes to plastic:

✅ Milk bottles
✅ Ice cream, butter and yoghurt tubs
✅ Shampoo and soap bottles
✅ Soft drink and juice bottles
❌ Plastic toys

If you don't see your item of interest listed above, don't worry! Search it up on Recycle Mate to find out how to best dispose of it or give it a second life through donation. You can also check with your local council for more information. ♻️

If you have eligible containers, like some plastic drink bottles, they can even be dropped off at Containers for Change QLD so you can turn your trash into cash. 🪙

Today’s question, “What do I do with an old car battery?” 🚙🪫

As always, batteries NEVER go in your kerbside bins. Instead you can safely dispose of them at participating drop-off locations.

We have over 8,000 safe disposal options listed on Recycle Mate so you can find your local options via our app or website. There’s a link in our bio to both! 🔗
