As Bartlett Manufacturing celebrates 70 years in 2026, we’re reflecting on the milestones that recognise the growing capability of the business.

By the mid-1970s, Bartlett’s was expanding beyond traditional canvas work, taking on PVC materials, new products and larger projects.

In 1984, Bartlett manufactured its first bunker covers, haystack covers, silage covers, dam liners and cricket pitch covers.

In 1986, the business secured an export order for 100 polyethylene bunker covers. Too large and heavy to handle in the usual way, the Bartlett brothers worked outside normal factory hours, to avoid impacting daily production, hand-rolling the covers over the joists.

A great snapshot of the ingenuity and hard work of the Bartlett team.

As Bartlett Manufacturing celebrates 70 years in 2026, we’re reflecting on the people who have contributed across generations

The youngest of our three owners Max Bartlett, left school at 17 to join the family business. He started as a cutter under the guidance of his brother John, building a deep understanding of products, fabrication and manufacturing from the ground up.

Over the next eleven years, Max worked across all areas of production gaining invaluable experience and knowledge. He even had 12 months running a Bartlett Canvas shop in Mildura during this period.

In 1986, Max became Production Manager for the business. His skills and knowledge allowed him to drive fabrication development, introduce new welding technology and establish systems and processes across our entire manufacturing operation.

His deep understanding of fabric construction and welding became a key asset to the business, turning ideas into practical outcomes on the factory floor while meeting customer requirements to the high Bartlett Manufacturing standard.

Known for his problem-solving mindset, Max believed nothing was impossible — if something had never been done before, that only gave him more reason to work out how to do it. As Max often said: “I don’t know yet, but if they want us to make it, we’ll work out how.”
With this mindset Max is now recognised as a world leading production expert in our industry

Max continues to sit on our board of directors

As Bartlett Manufacturing celebrates 70 years in 2026, we’re reflecting on the milestones that recognised the growing capability of the business.

In 1975, Bartlett’s joined the Canvas Goods Manufacturers Association (CGMA). Just two years later, in 1977, the business was recognised at the CGMA Canvas Awards, taking out First Place for a new or unusual applications for canvas, as well as the overall award.

The winning project was a fruit stall cover and blinds installation at the Phoenix Market Complex in Armstrong Street South, Ballarat. The image shown is the original Canvas Bulletin cover featuring the award.

🎉 Celebrating Dave's 20-Year Milestone at Bartlett Manufacturing! 🎉

Dave joined Bartlett Manufacturing 20 years ago, starting as a casual employee before securing a permanent role in our Tank Liner division. Over the years, he developed outstanding technical skills, progressed into a Shift Leader role and built a reputation as a dependable leader and mentor.

A move to our General division during a busy bunker cover season soon became permanent, where Dave has continued to make a significant contribution. His extensive expertise in high frequency and hot air welding is now relied upon across a wide range of products, and more recently he has played an important role supporting the finishing of our manufactured under licence products as demand has continued to grow.

Known for his laid-back nature, strong work ethic and unique sense of humour, Dave is always willing to share his knowledge, support his teammates and step in wherever needed. He has also made valuable contributions beyond the factory floor as a long-serving First Aider, OH&S Representative and former Social Club committee member.

Outside of work, Dave is the bass guitarist for local heavy metal band DISTORTA, which regularly performs around the region and has proudly supported community fundraising events.

Congratulations, Dave, on reaching this outstanding milestone. Thank you for your dedication, loyalty and contribution over the past 20 years. We look forward to many more to come.
