The need for the arts across school curriculums in before and after school programs as well as summer programs goes along with everything parents, administrators, educators and communities want for our children to grow and develop in terms of academic achievement, social and emotional developm
ent. Active involvement in the arts is linked with increases in math, reading, cognitive, critical thinking and verbal skills. Learning through the arts also improves motivation, concentration, confidence and teamwork. With increases in student enrollment in after school programs across the country, an estimated 8.4 million according to Afterschool Alliance (2009). Therefore the need for programs with a well-rounded academic curriculum that includes arts education is important especially to students who would otherwise have little to no exposure to the arts, particularly from a historical perspective.
