Ever play musical chairs? If there aren't enough chairs when the music stops and the chairs are needed, there will always be a loser.

Rates of homelessness in your community? If there aren't enough housing units at the lower end of the housing market (or through non-market housing), expect there to be a lot more homelessness.

In fact, there is proof that availability of deeply affordable housing has a greater impact on rates of homelessness than the likes of rates of trauma, substance use, mental illness, poverty, climate or politics in a community. That doesn't mean these aspects of a person's needs should be dismissed. It just means people with these experiences and conditions are more likely to not be homeless if there is adequate housing availability for very low-income people.
