An early career artist asked what I thought the most important thing to success in business was.

There's lots of possible answers:
A solid marketing strategy + practice
A strong portfolio
Supportive systems and processes to keep you on track
A flexible strategy you can follow and adapt as you learn
A network that is both deep and broad
Willingness to be uncomfortable, often
Making sound financial choices
Managing your time and energy

And underneath all of them:

Self-trust and courage

How would you rate your current level of courage and self-trust?

A few snaps of things I've enjoyed in May.

Truffle Cat, of course
Spring blooms
Some art I made
Notebooks
My sticker chart!

What have you enjoyed in May?

Sticker charts aren't only for kids.

You, my adult friend, can also enjoy stickers every day.
As long as you do the thing.

The thing you don't want to do.
The thing you're dragging your feet on.
The thing you keep saying you'll do, but haven't done yet.

Get a calendar from the dollar store.
Grab a sticker variety pack. Dollar stores also have these. (no need to break the bank here)
Decide what you're going to do.
Give yourself a sticker each day you do it.

This is my sticker chart where I track 4 things (I'm an over achiever, you don't need to be):
1. taking a slow morning (mental health)
2. taking a walk (physical and mental health)
3. meditating (mental health)
4. taking a nap (physical and mental health)

I got to have LOTS of stickers in May!

Here's the truth: it's taken several months to get here.
When I first started using a sticker chart, there was A LOT more white space. Perseverance matters.

Luckily, I really like stickers! So I kept going.

When's the last time you used a sticker chart for yourself?

Did you know I'm a (recovering) perfectionist?
If you've been around here awhile, probably!

Quite a lot of perfection, including my own, is a safety mechanism. If we are perfect we will be safe, we will not be rejected.

And we all know that's not true. We can be perfect and still get hurt.

Our perfectionsim can have beautiful results.
And it can hold us back: prevent us from making and sharing our art, from applying to that show that feels a little out of reach, from pitching someone who feels a bit intimidating.

What if you were allowed to be imperfect and a bit messy in all of these efforts?

Guess what, you are allowed to be imperfect.
You don't have to knock it out of the park on your first try (or even your 10th)

Is there something in your work and life that you might be holding just a bit too tightly right now?

"I am a painter for the 20th century: during my childhood I lived through the revolutionary Irish movment, Sinn Féin, and the wars, Hiroshima, Hi**er, the death camps, and daily violence that I've experienced all my life. And after all that they want me to paint bunches of pink flowers..."
- Francis Bacon

We are made for the times we're in.

Our time is challenging and enraging.
And people have lived through worse, and will again. It might even be us living through worse.

How do you want to respond to your time on this planet?

It doesn't have to be reflection of turmoil, like Bacon's work. It can be honoring beauty, embracing the absurd, soothing hearts, teaching children.
What matters is you choose to respond.

So, how will you respond?

A Zen master's advice to me, and to all of us:

Tend your roots.

Do you know what your roots are?
And are you tending to them?

I've made the mistake of neglecting said roots. Hoping they'd survive on their own.

They don't.

When the roots are damaged, the tree will wither.
And by the time you see it on the tree, the damage is further along than you want it to be.

So friend, what are your figurative roots?
And how are you tending them?

The host of a call I was on asked "if you could have any job, what would it be?"

I didn't have an answer because I'm already doing the thing I love. There's no other way I'd rather spend my days. Seriously.

My clients light up my days. I can see aspects of their work and success that they can't (yet) and bring those into the conversation. We bat them around, reshape them, and move forward with courage and confidence.

is a painter, musician, actor, set designer, and all round incredible human. His paintings may seem like colourful bursts of architecture, but they're actually deep reflections of our urban surroundings. They explore the conflicts and concessions we walk past every day.

Give him a follow to see more of his thoughtful work. And if you're in southern Ontario, he'll be in several art shows over the coming months, check him out!

If you know me at all, you know I love spreadsheets.

I'm basically unstoppable with a spreadsheet. Let's be honest, a collection of spreadsheets, linked together.

And sometimes even I need the pleasure of gliding ink over paper, and doodling in the white space.

When I struggle to stay grounded in my spreadsheets, I lean on my notebooks.

How about you?
Are you primarily notebook or digital? Or do you have a hybrid system?

Last call!

If you're a visual artist and have business tasks you're avoiding, this is the place for you!

Join a small group of other creatives, facilitated by me! I'll guide you through identifying the work to be done and then we'll do it. Coworking, aka body doubling, is a highly effective technique for completing those tasks you're either unmotivated to do, or are reluctant to do.

Come find out for yourself at the low fee of $9.

In the Coworking For Creatives program, we mostly work on the annoying stuff we won't do on our own.

But once a month, we make art together. We are all artists after all.

Curious?

You can join a Mini Session next week Tues and Wed.
More info here: http://go.alisasingh.com/coworking-mini-session

If there's enough interest, I'll hold more of these Mini Sessions in the future.
