Today is World Sight Day.

Most vision loss is preventable or treatable. That fact is the entire reason this profession exists.

Every independent eye care professional in this country is part of that: the exam that caught something early, the referral made at the right moment, the patient who finally came in after putting it off for three years.

It isn’t dramatic work. It’s steady work. It’s a chair, a conversation, and someone’s sight.

To every optician, optometrist, and practice team across Canada: thank you for the part you play in it.

If it’s been more than two years since your own last exam, today is a good day to book one.

October is Children’s Vision Month in Canada.

Here’s the number worth repeating: roughly 1 in 4 school-aged children has a vision problem that affects their ability to read, learn, and play.

Most of them won’t say anything. Not because they’re hiding it, but because they assume everyone sees the way they do.

What often gets noticed instead: trouble focusing in class. Avoiding reading. Headaches. Sitting too close to the screen. Behaviour that looks like a learning issue and isn’t.

The recommended schedule, per the Canadian Association of Optometrists:
→ First exam at 6 to 9 months
→ Again between ages 2 and 5
→ Annually from 6 to 19

Every independent practice in this country has a version of the same story: the kid who came in for frames and left with an answer their family had been looking for.
