Happy World Occupational Therapy Day! 💙

At Morning Star, we were honoured to support the Manitoba Society of Occupational Therapists (MSOT) and spend time with some truly amazing people—skilled clinicians who see the whole person, collaborate with care, and advocate for equity and meaningful participation.

A special thank you to Justin and Charlene, two remarkable OTs and strong leaders who lead by walking alongside others. Justin’s thoughtfulness and care shine through in the way he considers his role in the world and supports people on their journeys. Charlene brings that same commitment to caring, connecting, and lifting others up.

A STRATEGIC PLAN ISN'T A SHELF DECORATION.

There. We said it. 😉

Every year, organizations invest significant time, energy and resources into strategic planning.

There's a retreat. Great conversations. Colourful sticky notes. Big ideas, even a beautifully designed document.

Everyone leaves feeling inspired.

And then Monday happens.

The emails pile up. The operational demands take over. The urgent replaces the important.

Six months later, someone asks, "Whatever happened to that strategic plan?"

Here's the thing. A strategic plan is only as valuable as what happens after it's approved.

A good plan needs more than ambitious goals.

It needs:

✔️ Defined responsibilities and accountability

✔️ Realistic timelines and resources

✔️ Meaningful ways to measure progress

BEHIND EVERY SMALL BUSINESS IS SOMEONE TAKING A BIG RISK.

It's Small Business Week, and while we celebrate entrepreneurship, innovation and economic contributions, let's acknowledge what building a business actually looks like.

It's not always glamorous.

It's late nights, difficult decisions, unpredictable cash flow, learning things you never imagined you'd need to know and occasionally wondering whether you have completely lost your mind.

It's wearing six different hats before lunch.

It's celebrating a new client one day and worrying about next month's expenses the next.

It's believing in something enough to keep building it, even when the path forward isn't entirely clear.

Small businesses aren't built on ideas alone. They're built on courage, persistence, relationships and a tremendous amount of work.

My grandma Katherine was born in 1904. She was 25 when the Persons Case opened the door for women to be appointed to Canada’s Senate.

I think about that when I think about the businesswoman she was. She had the knowledge, the determination and the ability. Yet the businesses she helped build weren’t in her name.

Recently, I shared a little of her story. Today, on Persons Day, she’s on my mind again.

Persons Day marks an important step toward equality. But that progress did not remove the racial and colonial barriers many women continued to face. Recognizing how far we’ve come also means being honest about who was left behind—and who still faces barriers today. The fight for equality is far from over. There is still much to do to ensure every woman has the rights, safety, opportunities and recognition she deserves.

As a woman who now leads and owns a business, I wish I could sit down with her and talk about all of it. What she built. What she wanted. What she might have done with the opportunities I’ve had.

I can put my name on what I build. I don’t take that lightly.

And I want more women to have the freedom, resources and recognition to do the same.

WHO'S SUPPORTING THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR?

Let's talk about something that doesn't get nearly enough attention in the nonprofit sector.

We invest in programs. We support staff development. We recruit board members. We build strategic plans.

But what about the person responsible for keeping it all moving?

The Executive Director.

The person navigating competing priorities, financial pressures, staffing challenges, board expectations, community relationships and the occasional crisis before their second cup of coffee.

They're expected to have the answers, make difficult decisions, support everyone else and somehow find time to think strategically.

And often, they're doing it without a professional peer who truly understands the weight of the role.

Leadership can be incredibly rewarding. It can also be incredibly isolating.

At Morning Star Exchange, we believe supporting nonprofit leadership is an investment in the entire organization.
