"Lisa... Can I ask you something?"
"Why do we have so many policies that nobody uses?"
This question usually comes with a smile...
..because everyone in the room already knows the answer.
Every organization has a binder, a shared drive, or a folder full of policies that were created with the best of intentions.
The problem isn't that the policies are bad.
The problem is that they were never integrated into the culture of the organization.
Great policies don't exist to satisfy an auditor, a funder, or a Board.
They exist to guide decisions.
They create consistency.
They reduce risk.
They protect people.
And they give leaders confidence when difficult situations arise.
A policy that sits on a shelf isn't protecting anyone.
The best governance documents are written to be practical, understandable, and used.
Because a policy only creates value when people know it exists... understand it... and use it.
If you picked one policy at random today, would your leadership team know how to apply it?
