Among Marc Newson's early designs is the 1992 fit-out of the Hysterie Boutique in Frankfurt am Main, featuring mobile furniture such as this cylindrical aluminum changing pod mounted on small casters - one of three examples - which Quittenbaum will auction on October 13. The formal language of the Australian-born designer is unique and unmistakable. He began with jewelry design and went on to design virtually everything, from mobile phones to cars, kitchen appliances, clothing, and even a rocket-powered spacecraft for space tourism. Asked about his inspirations in an interview, Newson named music, film, and travel, but above all Japanese culture as one of his greatest sources of inspiration - in Japanese culture, he said, everything is interconnected: religion, flower arranging, packaging, and object design. Of course he's a "geek," Marc Newson said in an interview: "Designers have an obsession with detail. How else could they understand how something works…“

For her first major fashion assignment for Vogue, Annie Leibovitz was sent to Paris by Anna Wintour during the couture shows.

Working alongside fashion editor Grace Coddington, Leibovitz created a photographic essay featuring Kate Moss and Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs—an encounter that would become the celebrated Puffy Takes Paris editorial.

Part fashion story, part cultural document, the series captured the electricity of Paris couture at the close of the 1990s.
Among the images from Puffy Takes Paris is this striking black-and-white portrait of Kate Moss.

Leibovitz captures her in Christian Dior Haute Couture shoulder-grazing diamond earrings, setting the extraordinary brilliance of the jewels against the softness of Moss’s skin.

The result is less a conventional fashion portrait than an exercise in light, texture and contrast—where couture becomes sculpture and the model becomes icon.

The photograph was later included in The Kate Moss Portfolio, published by Danziger Projects, New York, as part of an edition of 30.

His use of wood as a material and his combination of traditional craftsmanship with innovative construction made Pierre Chapo one of the most important French furniture designers of the 20th century.
Chapo’s furniture typically requires few or no metal joints. One example of this is the ’Chlacc’ technique he developed, in which thin wooden slats are combined to form sturdy elements. It demonstrates Chapo’s interest in making the most of the material’s natural properties and showcasing them in his furniture.
The ’S46’ chair, known as the ’Dromadaire,’ also illustrates his unique ability to blend function and design. The seat can be easily folded up without the need for a conventional hinge—the wooden construction itself provides stability.

The pair we offer is a timeless piece of furniture thanks to its combination of warm wood, canvas fabric, and brown leather, along with a beautiful patina that has developed over the years.

By founding his own company, Vetreria Archimede Seguso, after World War II, Seguso catapulted himself into the pantheon of glass designers.
Seguso rarely attached importance to specific names for his creations. It is therefore not surprising that many of the well-known pattern names arose by chance or through outside influences. They are often an interpretation of the physical appearance. This is also true of one of his most famous patterns, ’Merletto,’ whose fine interlacing of threads is reminiscent of delicate lace. The design appears in a wide variety of forms, including this impressive version of the ’merletto irregolare’ in anamorphic shape.

Gaetano Pesce chose the name ’Shadow’ for this design because the armchair memorizes the body of the person sitting in it—much like a shadow that reveals a person’s presence.

The unique shape is not created through traditional manufacturing using a fixed mold, but rather through an open process that the manufacturer, Meritalia®, developed specifically for this purpose: The polyurethane foam expands freely inside of the coated fabric cover, giving each armchair its own organic form. It is only upon contact with the user that Shadow takes on its final form—the body shapes the material through its weight, and the person sitting in the armchair leaves their mark on it while simultaneously being embraced by it.

The colorful ’Rainbow’ chair, marketed by the Italian furniture manufacturer Cappellini, marked a breakthrough for designer Patrick Norguet in 2000—shortly after he had founded his own studio in Paris.

This piece of furniture, which appears simple at first glance, is the result of a complex production process: Individual colored plastic strips are bonded together using ultrasound and then polished by hand, creating the chair’s characteristic mirror-like surface.

When the sun’s rays stream into our showroom and hit the acrylic glass, the chair unleashes its very special magic, casting colorful reflections of light throughout the room.

One of our youngest and best. When Massimiliano started at Quittenbaum, he was still a theater studies student. At Quittenbaum, he caught the design bug and switched his major to art history. He has just completed his master’s thesis, in which he examines cultural coding in design using the specific example of Shiro Kuramata’s designs for Memphis. How are Kuramata’s works received in an international context? And can certain characteristics of his designs be attributed to a specific origin—Japan would seem the obvious choice. But first impressions can be deceiving, as Massi will demonstrate in his academic work. What is considered Japanese can just as easily be explained in terms of Western influences. Massi can also share his passion for vintage watches with us when he’s not busy bringing order to our bookkeeping with his characteristic thoroughness.
