In Woman with a Camera (Profile), Anne Collier revisits the visual language of vintage photography and advertising, appropriating an archival image of a woman intently observing a camera. Characteristic of Collier’s practice, the work examines the ways in which photography has historically constructed representations of women, both as subjects and as makers of images. By re-photographing and enlarging found imagery, Collier transforms a seemingly straightforward portrait into a nuanced meditation on authorship, spectatorship, and the gendered history of the photographic medium. The work exemplifies her critically acclaimed exploration of image culture and the mechanisms through which photographs shape perception and identity.

A characteristic late work by Sam Francis, in which vibrant clusters of blue, turquoise, violet, and magenta unfold across the canvas in an energetic interplay of colour, line, and gesture.
Created during the final decade of the artist’s career, Untitled (SF92-91) exemplifies Francis’s evolving visual language: colour condenses into dynamic formations, drippings and inscriptions animate the surface, while luminous transparency and a sense of boundless energy remain at the heart of the composition.
“Los Angeles is best for the light in my work.” — Sam Francis

The undisputed highlight of our upcoming Modern Art & Post War / Contemporary Art Evening Sale on 11 June.

Joan Miró’s Peinture (1936) belongs to the celebrated Masonite series created during one of the most pivotal moments in both the artist’s career and European history. Executed at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, these works represent a radical reinvention of painting—raw, experimental, and profoundly influential.

Combining oil, casein, tar and sand on Masonite, Miró distilled his visual language into a work of extraordinary power and intensity. Rarely does a painting so perfectly unite historical importance, museum provenance, and artistic innovation.

Having been exhibited at Tate Modern, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, Peinture stands among the most important Miró works to appear on the market in recent years.

Estimate €2,000,000–2,500,000

Our Senior Specialist Modern Art, Annegret Thoma, recommends a remarkable and intimate work by August Macke:

Naked Woman with Child, 1912
Estimate: €40,000–60,000

Created during Macke’s celebrated Bonn years (1911–1913), this luminous oil sketch captures the artist at the height of his creative powers. With vibrant colours and spontaneous brushwork, the composition combines two recurring themes in Macke’s oeuvre: the n**e and the child.
While the scene may evoke the intimacy of family life, the work transcends portraiture and instead reflects Macke’s vision of harmony, nature, and an earthly paradise, a world of warmth, light, and human connection.

Macke’s Bonn period was shaped not only by his involvement with the Blue Rider and the Rhenish Expressionists, but also by a deeply personal sense of happiness rooted in family life and everyday moments. These themes became central to his artistic language and continue to resonate today.
A rare and expressive work filled with summer atmosphere, radiant colour, and emotional immediacy.
