Autumn Budget: The HR Headlines for Small Businesses

The Autumn Budget brings several people-related changes that SMEs need to prepare for:

💼 National Living Wage rising to £12.71/hr (from April 2026) – plus increases across all younger worker and apprentice rates.

💼 Tax & National Insurance thresholds frozen – meaning employees’ take-home pay may fall in real terms as salaries rise.

💼 Salary-sacrifice pension perks capped – from 2029, contributions over £2,000/year via salary sacrifice will attract NICs.

💼 Additional support for apprenticeships – especially for under 25s in SMEs.

💼 Employment law changes on the horizon – with potential shifts to dismissal rights, industrial action rules and union regulations.

These updates mean payroll costs will rise, benefits may need rethinking, and clear communication with employees will be more important than ever.
