Getting someone's pay wrong is the fastest way to lose their trust.

And, if it happens more than once, you're looking at a constructive dismissal claim, for breaching a fundamental term of the contract.

National Payroll Week runs from 7-11 September.

If your payroll process relies on memory, manual spreadsheets or someone "just knowing" what to do, now is a good time to tighten it up.

We can help you to audit your payroll processes and make sure that the basics are locked down.

Employees who feel developed stay longer, perform better and cause fewer problems.

Ultimately, this is beneficial for your business.

If you've got junior staff and no structure around how you support them, that's a gap. Not a big one, but it compounds over time.

Structure can look like: regular check-ins, clear expectations and basic feedback. Most small businesses already do pieces of this informally; they just haven't written it down.

We can help you to put something simple in place that actually holds up.

August is quiet for a lot of businesses.

It's the best time to do all that HR admin you've been avoiding since January.

Things we often see piling up but are good to sort now:

• Contracts that haven't been updated since the business changed
• No written policies for flexible working, sickness or disciplinary processes
• Performance issues that have never been properly documented
• Employees who haven't had a review in over a year

If you want help with ironing these areas out while things are quiet (rather than when it's an emergency), get in touch and we'll run you through how it works.

Summer bank holiday on 31 August... sounds straightforward, but is it?

Who's in? Who's off? Who agreed to work it and on what terms? What does your contract actually say about bank holidays?

Every August, small business owners end up in awkward conversations because nothing was written down. Sometimes it costs them.

If your contracts are vague on bank holiday pay, hours or entitlement, this is a good moment to sort that before the holiday arrives.

We can help you to get the basics right so there are no surprises at the end of the month. Feel free to get in touch.

Hired someone but feel you made a mistake?

From January 2027, new hires get unfair dismissal protection after six months, not two years.

This means that anyone you hire from 1 July 2026 is covered by the new rules.

You can't just let them go a few months after bringing them on and hope for the best.

If dismissal is on your mind, we can help you to set up a simple process that protects you and gives your employee a fair chance.

Since April 2024, employees can request flexible working from day one. Twice a year.

You have two months to respond and can only refuse on one of eight specific grounds.

From October 2026, that gets tighter. Citing a ground won't be enough. You'll need to show that the refusal was actually reasonable in your specific situation.

If your process is informal or inconsistent, that test will be hard to pass.

We can help you to build a clear policy and documented decision trail before the summer requests arrive.

There's no legal maximum workplace temperature in the UK.

But there is a duty to provide reasonable working conditions.

In a warehouse, a kitchen or outdoors in July, that becomes hard to ignore.

If someone raises a concern and you haven't documented that you've taken it seriously, you're exposed.

We can help you to understand what reasonable actually looks like for your workplace.

Since October 2024, employers have had a legal duty to actively prevent sexual harassment.

Not just respond to it.

That duty doesn't switch off at the door of a pub. Work events are still work events.

Many business owners don't think they have a responsibility here, but you could easily be exposed.

With Alcohol Awareness Week running from 6-12 July, now is a great time to review your policies and approach.

We can help you to get it all in place. Reach out for a confidential chat.

UK employees took an average of 9.4 sick days last year.

The highest in over 15 years.

The biggest driver of short-term absence?

Childcare.

Which means summer, when school's out and cover falls through, is often when the pattern peaks.

Now is a good time to check how absence is actually being managed in practice.

We can help you to tighten things up before the pattern gets expensive.

July already? Time to take a quick look at how your people plans are tracking this year.

Are your absence levels where you expected? Are those January objectives still making sense? Anyone in your team ready for the next step?

Small tweaks now can save headaches when December rolls around.
