Yesterday we launched Scale Up East Sussex 🚀

The day was about setting the stage to scale, where to start and demystifying the challenges that come with scaling. We had an excellent fireside conversation with Josh Robson, Chief Policy Officer at the ScaleUp Institute, who gave us the national context of scaling and how we could use the findings in East Sussex. 📈

While Josh gave us the national picture, Richard Freeman, CEO of Always Possible, gave insight on how to connect those insights with a key local opportunity: devolution. He expanded on what it means for local businesses and how scale ups can position themselves.

🏛️ Peter Lane and Frank Hyde questioned the cohort about their market opportunities, assessed their arenas and capabilities and fundamentally where to play when you are expanding your operations.

Our CEO Nigel Lambe and Deputy CEO Claire Pasquill opened up a discussion on the 8 habits of successful scale-up companies, which stirred lots of contemplation and laughs. 💡

To finish, we had our usual 'Been There Done That' segment where we celebrate successful local stories. This time we had a conversation with Konrad Brits of Falcon Coffees Ltd and Simon Brewer of Brewers Decorator Centres that focused on resilience, culture and staying hungry as a scaler.

A huge thank you to all of our speakers and new scalers for joining us. It was such a vibrant day, full of energy, and a real reminder of how uniquely positioned East Sussex is to scale 🌱

Something spooky is happening at Sussex Innovation 🎃👻

Yesterday, our community member, Down Syndrome Development Trust, took over the café with a pop-up stall packed with candles, cards, and all sorts of festive Halloween goodies. Missed it? They’re coming back on 30th October, so you’ve got one more chance to treat yourself 🕯️

Our team spent yesterday at Brighton Summit with the Sussex business community, for a day that mixed business, philosophy and plenty of laughs. Here’s what stayed with us 👇

✔️ Journalist Ash Sarkar’s keynote made a funny, thought-provoking case for in-person connection, and what we lose when we try to live our lives online.
✔️ In “The power of curiosity”, Miia Forbes from Curious Agenda reminded us to keep asking questions about what’s changing in our businesses.
✔️ We swapped business plans for plot twists, writing a soap opera set at a business show with EastEnders screenwriter Lawson.
✔️ Derrick Mason from Mindflow Academy shared a powerful message on accountability: being conscious of your own role in how things are panning out, and focusing on what you can change rather than blaming outside factors.
