Did you know, there’s no legal limit in the UK for ‘too many’ sick days, so it comes down to having a clear policy and applying it consistently.

Being off sick should never automatically lead to disciplinary action.

However, repeated or patterned absence may need to be reviewed if it’s impacting the business.

Before formal action, focus on support:

Is work affecting their health?
Have they had time to recover?
Can adjustments help?
Is communication clear?

This week is National Women’s Health Week, which is something that small business owners should be thinking about.

Simple, thoughtful steps, with your employees in mind, can make a real difference. Steps such as:

- Encouraging open conversations around health without stigma

- Offering flexibility for medical appointments or wellbeing needs

- Reviewing policies to ensure they reflect real-life experiences (including menopause, menstrual health, and mental wellbeing).

When employees feel supported, they’re more engaged, loyal, and able to perform at their best, and talking of menopause, due to the new Employment Rights Act 2025, UK employers with more than 250 employees must publish Menopause Action Plans by 2027, with voluntary reporting starting from last month.

This week is a great opportunity to reflect: does your workplace truly support women’s health?
