What makes Chesterfield a place people want to spend time in, not just pass through?

In the latest video from our Chair, Andrew Byrne, we explore why Chesterfield’s unique mix of heritage, green space, independent businesses and cultural experiences continues to attract people from across the region.

🔹 Wandering through our historic market and meeting our friendly independent retailers.
🔹 Heading to a local festival, whether for cricket, creativity or even food and drink.
🔹 Stepping out into our green spaces and exploring the Peak District in no time.

Our town offers a mix of experiences that are difficult to replicate elsewhere.

Combined with ongoing investment in our town centres and public spaces, it’s helping create a place where people want to visit, stay longer and keep coming back.

We love to see young people finding careers in their hometown ❤️

Now, after year one of the Construction Skills Hub in action, more young people are making that happen:

🔹 60 students engaged on the core programme
🔹 26 students progressing into employment

Yet while the numbers are impressive, the real experience had by these students is more important.

One of the students shared:
“Being based in the middle of a housing development gave me a real insight into the industry, and my tutor Shane was brilliant.
He showed me how important high standards are and helped build my confidence and problem-solving skills.

“Now I’ve started an apprenticeship and my journey in construction is just beginning.”

More paths are opening for young talent to start a career in Chesterfield. Could you support them by offering an apprenticeship or T Level?

Our regeneration story isn’t just about future ambition - it’s already happening 🏗️

At UKREiiF 2026, we showcased the scale of development, investment and transformation taking place across Chesterfield.

Alongside the East Midlands Canal Corridor, we highlighted projects helping to reshape the borough.

Including recently completed projects, 'Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield' and DRIIVe. As well as significant progress being made on the Chesterfield Canal, and works beginning on PEAK.

Together, these projects demonstrate:
🏗️ Major regeneration opportunities
🤝 Strong partnerships
🌱 A focus on sustainability and innovation
📍 Excellent East Midlands connectivity

7,800 jobs. 3,900 homes. £473 million added to the economy every year ⬅️

That’s the scale of the opportunity we were able to present at UKREiiF with the East Midlands Canal Corridor. One of our borough's key transformational opportunities connecting Chesterfield and Staveley through housing, employment, innovation and sustainable growth.

The Canal Corridor demonstrates what partnership-led regeneration can achieve, bringing together public and private sector ambition to create connected communities, unlock investment opportunities and support emerging clean energy and innovation sectors across our region.

It was fantastic sharing this at UKREiiF, with investors, developers and strategic partners from across the UK able to see Chesterfield’s long-term growth story.

Big news for Chesterfield’s rail sector 🚆

The Derbyshire Rail Industry Innovation Vehicle (DRIIVe), located next to Barrow Hill Roundhouse Railway Centre, is now complete and set to open later this year.

DRIIVe will create new jobs, training and research opportunities for the rail industry, including modern classrooms, a digital lab and commercial workshop space.

Councillor Tricia Gilby, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, said:

“It’s fantastic to see work on the construction of DRIIVe now complete. Its delivery strengthens Chesterfield’s position within the rail sector."

DRIIVe will also provide a base for rail supply chain businesses, supporting collaboration and innovation.

This morning at UKREiiF we showcased our £2 billion regeneration programme across Chesterfield and Staveley – spanning new homes, employment sites and town centre regeneration.

A busy East Midlands Pavillion heard Tricia Gilby, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council share the borough’s strengths and commitments to inclusive growth while Andrew Byrne, Chair of Destination Chesterfield highlighted progress and new opportunities.

Chesterfield plays an important role in the East Midlands’ wider ambitions. Working with East Midlands Combined County Authority and Team East Midlands to achieve regional growth.

The borough forms part of the Canal Corridor – a strategic growth area identified by EMCCA.

Within this area, plans for Chesterfield and Staveley could deliver up to 3,900 homes and 7,800 jobs, bringing together connected projects – from town centre regeneration to Investment Zone sites – into a coordinated programme of development.
